I graduate from the LPN program in December and would love to get into a labor and delivery unit, mother baby unit, or nursery once I graduate. I know a couple of the students in my class are shooting for the same thing. While I wish them the best I want to do everthing in my power to give me a leg up on the competition. Are there things I can be doing now while in school to hepl me land that spot on OB once I graduate?

I know in our area, there are no LPN's in L & D or nursery, btu there are a few in the post-partum unit. You might have better luck in an OB office. I would just apply to your local hospital(s) and offices and see if you get any bites. I would get your resumes out as soon as you could to beat out the competition!

Good Luck!

I work in a smaller rural hospital and we do utilize LVN's in some areas.. Our OB unit is combined as L&D, PP and nursery..we all just work together as a team..The RN's have to do the L&D portion but otherwise we trade off in different areas..I love it.. I came here fresh out of RN school and its a more relaxed environment to work in.  My mother is a nurse manager in a large maternal-child unit (about 200-250 deliveries a month) she does not use LVN's in L&D or nursery at all but does use them occasionally in PP on pts who are not deemed high risk.

Thanks ladies! I don't plan on being an LPN long. I'm in a program that takes you Assoc. LPN, to ADN, to BSN by going to class every weekend. I have a family at home and have to work fulltime so weekends are the only time I have for school. It works out ok.... though it does feel a little overwhelming at times.... I'd like to get on somewhere where I can progress in the career field as my education progresses.
