I already shared some of my experiences. My husband is involved as a leader and they go on tons of camp outs. I am usually the camp nurse and it is always a family affair. Those of you who are single moms this is a great way to get some positive male reinforcement in your sons lives. I could write a book on our positive experiences but I won't, I would love to hear from others involved.

Both my sons were Cub and Boy Scouts, and both became Eagle Scouts at age 13. I was a scoutmaster for twelve years - It was a great way to participate in activities with the boys and their friends, but from a distance - in Cub Scouts the boys do things with their parents, but in Boy Scouts they are taught to be self sufficient and run their own program (with adult assistance and advice).

It was a great experience for them, and taught them leadership and survival skills - and of course it was a lot of fun! As a boy I was also a Scout, and my father and grandfather were scoutmasters.

That is a really good idea for single moms with sons, especially if they work many hours.   I personally don't know much about scouting, but I think it will help keep children out of trouble as well as teach them some skills they may need later on in their lives.

I think that is such a good idea. In this profession it is very hard to spread yourself out equally. Now you are giving your kids a chance to do something that they enjoy and that will teach them important skills.Great idea!

My scouting experience has been that I was a girl scout from the 1st grade through high school. I loved to go and do the scouting things becasue I had four brothers all older than me so I got to go do things with out them. I think that it is a good thing to get our children involved in. I have not got my son in scouting but I think that I am going to do it this year. When it come time for my daughter to be in scouting I am going to get her involved as well.

I was a Star Scout. I really enjoyed scouting. My father would go with me on camping trips with

the Scouts. He enjoyed these scouting camp outs as much as or more than me.

Scouting, in my opinion, definitely builds character and ethical values.

My experiences in scouting helped me survive my experiences in Vietnam as a combat soldier.

I was part of the Explorer Scouts, we volunteered in local hospitals as candy stripers, we observed surgery, we worked in the ER, we were aloud to ride CareFlight (our Flight unit--not during a pick-up), and other cool things.  I enjoyed it and I think it helped me really decide whether or not I wanted to work in the medical profession.

cool stories.  my only stories are of those while camping when I was little.  I always did like medicine from a very small age.

The scouting program not only gives our young children a positive role model but the Eagle Rank will actually open doors for your careers down the road as it did for one of my sons.

Scouting is great. Not only for the kids, but also for the parents. I was a Girl Scout from Juniors through Seniors and I wouldn't trade any of it for anything. We had the most awesome leader who followed us all the way through and I'm still very close with her today. We went on lots of trips, expanded our knowledge on many diverse subjects, did LOTS of community service, and raised lots of money for charity as well as collecting, making and donating items for good causes. While doing it we never realized that alot of what we were doing was actually teaching us life lessons that I have turned to many times. Also our troop took it a step further. We all (9 of us) earned a Girl Scout Gold Award, which is the hardest and most coveted award in Girl Scouting. I don't know about the statistics today (I earned my award 10 years ago!) but at the time fewer that 1% of Girl Scouts earned a Gold Award. I know that Girl Scouting today has been revamped to encourage older girls to stick with it, but it is a great organization to be involved in. When things in my life calm down I plan on becoming a leader.

I was involved in scouting when my children were younger. I was a Girl Scout leader for 6 years and a Den mother for 3. Although it was a lot of work planning meetings and activities, it was a great experience. I think it's kind of neat that when my children graduated from high school (2004 and 2005), many  of their friends/classmates shared special memories of our scouting days. Some of them even thanked me (again) for the camping trips, making ice cream in tin cans, apple picking, etc. It warmed my heart to know that I made a difference not only in the lives of my own children but other children as well. We made memories that will last a lifetime.

My favorite memories as a scout parent are the great times we had delivering cookies and wreaths!

Kayak...you just HAD to mention the cookies, didn't you?!?!?! lol. Yeah, that was always an interesting time. We had cookie booths and even had to use our leftover cookies to make crusts for cheesecakes to sell to make up the cost of the extras and raise funds for a trip to Canada. That was a blast! We never did wreaths, though. I've never heard of that.

We are now planning our middle sons Eagle Court of Honor, I posted his photo yesterday, it is like planning a wedding, but not as big, this son wants it small and personal so we will be doing that. It is a very special day for him and all of us, one more son to go to Eagle in a year or so. For his Eagle project he wired his school for radio, ham radio's it is a private Catholic school so it was a great project, now ALL the kids can enjoy use the CB radios and getting familiar with them.
