I'm working on a B.S.N., but would that alone allow me to work with the mentally ill?

Well, where I live (in Indiana) it is enough to work Psych, you really only have to have an ADN for it. You could always get your feet in the door and then specialize in psych as well.

That and the desire is all that you need. After two years you can get certification in psych/mental health nursing

Thanks for the responses. Here's perhaps a not so stupid question - what does 'specializing' in an area entail? Are you required to take further courses in a specific area, e.g., psych, or is it a matter of learning on the job?

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE USA IN ENGLAND YOU STUDY FOR THREE YEARS EITHER A DEGREE OR DIPLOMA THEY BOTH TAKE THREE YEARS ONLY THAT THE DEGREE YOU ARE STUDYING AT LEVEL 6 AND DIPLOMA ON LEVEL 5. YOU STUDY WHAT WE CALL THE COMMON FOUNDATION PROGAMME WHICH IS GENERAL NURSING FOR THE FIRST YEAR THEN THE SECOND & THIRDYEAR YOU STUDY YOUR BRANCH PROGRAMME I.E MENTAL HEALTH, THERE YOU STUDY MODULES LIKE BECOMING A MENTAL HEALTH NURSE, MULTICULTURAL PSYCHIATRY, PLANNING, IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING MENTAL HEALTH CARE, PSYCHOTROPICAL DRUGS,ETC. THEN YOU QUALIFY AS A REGISTERED MENTAL HEALTH NURSE [RMN]

IS THERE RMN IN THE USA? OR IS IT CALLED SOMETHING ELSE?

I have known LPN's that have worked in psych as well.  The biggest requirement to enter psych is patience.  Gen and Abnormal Psych, Human Growth and Dev,  and of course Pharmacology, which should be part of your standard Nursing curriculum.  You can receive certification in Psych which you can add to the litany of letters after your name, after two or 3 years, a certain number of hours in your chosen field of specialization and passing a standarized test.  I believe that you must be an RN to apply for the cert. For more info visit the American Nurse Credentialing Center- ANCC website.  You will receive the requirements, a study guide and testing information.  All nurses are being encouraged to go for certifications to advance the profession.  Good luck and go for it!
