What's it like to be an African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American, etc. nurse? Do you feel that the nursing organizations/unions/schools pay adequate attention to your groups?

i am an african american nurse for over 15 yrs, it has been very trying at times. i have had a lot of experience where it's not what you know or how your pts think you are great, its about you being subservent to the upper crust or being labeled a trouble maker. there have been situations where if you voice your opinion it's time for you to go. being assertive and non-white in the nursing field in the south is a one-way ticket to the unemployment line. don't get me wrong ,not only the majority is a problem you have to watch your back for the minority nurses also ,sometimes we are our worst enemy. If i'm seeing this wrong or this is a southern thing please let me know.

cfduncan, I beleive alot has changed for the better for minorites in nursing. I believe that because of the shortage of good nurses it has forced people to look past color and look at skill. I am relatively new to nursing so I may be wrong. But as a minority I was always encouraged and in some instances actively recruited, but this is when I lived in Nebraska where there are few minorities to begin with.
