Ok I need to take a fast track to working. I would still need to take pre-reqs for the nursing program at the local comm college or even the hospitals nursing program. So I was thinking of going to a technichal college for either medical assistant or medical administration. Both programs will take aobut the same time frame to complete. I was an EMT-B but my certification has long expired. My long term goals are to get my BSN and perhaps specialize but not sure where. Maybe a nurse midwife or practitioner.

Well my question is: considering my flexable career goals... Which course of education should I go with? Admin or Asst?

I can't wait for your feedback!

Since your LT goal is to get your BSN, MSN I would do Administration to learn the ins and outs of running a facility.  It is very good money and will give you a good head start in management where many BSN/MSN nurses go.  Medical Assisting wouldn't be much of a benifit since you have already been through EMT.  Here where I live medical assistants work mainly in the MD office, lab so I dont think that is what you are looking for.

You need to find out what the "medical administration" training is actually going to qualify you to do.  Some programs like this get you a secretary position in a hospital setting.  Technically, I suppose that's administrative, but most places don't require this training for these positions.  Without more info, I'd say that sounds like a waste of your time.  Since you're pursuing a nursing degree and it looks as if you're wanting a clinical position, I would suggest a CNA or PCT course that will allow you to be employed in a hospital setting.  In our area, Medical Assistants only work in office settings.

Thanks for your replies. I still have NO IDEA what to do but you both gave me some things to consider before making my decision.

Dont waste your time with Medical Assistant it pays peanut. I work as a Medical Administrative assistant too at times its basically just a medical secretary that learns medical terminology.

Thanks.

I think I am leaning more to the Administration side of the office. I think it will be useful to me since I am already familiar with some of the clinical side of things. The only thing I have to do is find the time to go and register. lol
