Have you ever known of a fellow nurse who was stealing prescription drugs? What was the reaction of the hospital administration and what actions were taken?

Yes, were I work @ we are being investagated for a whole card od a narc is missing from a pt. that expired. I was the nurse that she expired on my shift before shift change and when we counted it was in the drawer. The nurse who came on took care of returning the to the pharmacy box and couldn't get them to fit thru the whole and doesn't remmeber where or who she gave them too.Never destory a narc without a wittness .Someone took it and we are being blamed. It is a scary thought of being in trouble for something that wasn't your fault, If I knew who did this i would turn them in for sure.

yes - at a LTC facility where I worked a nurse was suspected of taking narcotics on several occasions but it could never be proven so nothing was ever done. And in another instance, same facility (had alot of problems there) another nurse, who was a terrific nurse by the way, but head butted with upper management was set up (I trully believe this) by the upper management for stealing narcotics and was subsequently fired (with no proof! - A card of narcotics was found to be missing after his shift was over).

I worked in a nursing facility for many years. The nurses then started noticing pain pills disappearing and not being charted as being administered. One of the newer nurses that was employed there was addicted to pain relievers and stealing them from the residents. She was needless to say terminated and lost her license.
But might i add..this is a incident that doesn't happen often and if it does, it's not brought to our attention.
