Hi everybody!  My name is Kristen and I am planning to start my nursing education very soon.  I am a former police officer who realized that it wasn't for me.  I'm hoping to start LPN school in 2009 but I plan on taking some courses before hand to get myself used to being in a classroom setting again.  I know it's kind of early to think about but I was thinking about specializing in either Labor&Delivery or Neonatology.  I may even do the doula/midwife thing.

My 6 year old daughter was born at 28 weeks and weighed 1lb 131/2 oz.  I was so touched by the love and compassion I received from the nurses in her NICU that I wanted to become part of the nursing community right then and there.  Unfortunately that's not the direction my life went.  I know it is a difficult specialty to enter but I want to help mothers that are going through what I went through.  It's so hard and I want to be there for them.   I look forward to any and all advice and information you have to give.

Ok...now that I've rambled on I can't wait to chat with some of you real soon.

                                                              Blessings & Hugs.....Kristen

I think that Neonatal nursing isn't right for everyone. If you have been through the expereance yourself you will know that CARING and COMPASSION are a big part of this job.The technical skills you will aquire because you want to do the best job you can for the little ones.

I have been a neonatal nurse for 19 years now and it is obviously my passion.Yet there are still days (like in any job)I am wondering what I am doing going to work everyday??Than I remember the beautiful little eyes looking thourgh the porthole doors as if to say "hey Lady Thanks" or the Mother looking sincerily in your eyes asking you to watch over her bundle of joy until she can come the next day.

That's when I realize that my job means ALOT more than just a paycheck.I know why I go to work everyday!!

Thanks c_l_

I'm not sure many LPN's work in neonatal or NICU, none I know are nursemidwives, because you must be an RN.  Good luck, but don't narrow your choices, to often your speciality picks you, not the other way around.

I think it is great that you are thinking about what you want to do....it is never to early to think about your future.  It will be a great ride.  Enjoy it!
