Nursing associations: Are they worth the money?
1. Do you belong to a nursing as sociation? 2. Why? Or Why Not? 3. Which organization do you belong to? 4. Do you find your organization helpful? 5. What is most helpful about your organization?

| Posted over 4 years ago Hi Ginny! Good topic - I belong to Sigma Theta Tau International, Iota Kappa Chapter. I got inducted when I was going to school for my master's. The chapter is from Gwynedd Mercy College, a small school right outside of Philly. I got to have many valuable experiences in this organization. I got to be in several positions in the chapter - vice president, president. I got to go to 2 Biennial Conventions in Indianapolis, IN. It was real exciting. I keep in the organization because I figure no matter what type of nursing I am doing, it is always best to show that you are involved in some type of organization and this is very generalized and international. If I ever go back for my doctorate, it will probably come in handy. You notice the big "if" though. I guess that could be the beginning of a new topic, though. Do you think we have any doctorally prepared nurses out there in the link? Or those going for it? What do you think about going for the doctorate? I will start that post and see where we go. I also belonged to Oncology Nursing Society before I got my Master's and I was working at Fox Chase Cancer Center. I got my oncology certification, also. I also belonged to the Gerontology Nurses in PA - was quite helpful after I received my Master's. I was president in that chapter, also. But, I lost interest in those groups and decided to stay with STT. I tried belonging to the State organization for Nursing but it was a bit political for me. Maybe some other day. |

I belong to Sigma Theta Tau International, Nu Gamma Chapter, International Nurses Society on Addictions, and The American Psychiatric Nurses Association. I joined for the educational value of the groups and for the networking. The most helpful aspects of membership for me has been the reduced fees for CEUs, getting to know others in my specialty, reduced fees for conferences, and the journals. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I used to be a member of AORN, however since half the time I was working and couldn't attend meetings, and the same nurses five years in a row were chosen to go to congress, I simply didn't renew one year. NLN and ANA I would never consider. I think they've held nursing back, do not work for all nurses, just a select few and have their own agendas for those select few. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I'm a member of the national student nurses association. I think that they are a good thing for me because I got a discount on health insurance. Also they offer alot of educational information on their website. I think they are a good thing and they memberships was relatively inexpensive. They do also offer discounts from Barnes and Noble etc... |
