| Posted over 4 years ago The guilty pleasure I miss most when I’m out slogging on the campaign trail is the chance to sprawl on the chaise and watch a vacuously spunky and generically sassy chick flick. So imagine my delight, my absolute astonishment, when the hokey chick flick came out on the trail, a Cinderella story so preposterous it’s hard to believe it’s not premiering on Lifetime. Instead of going home and watching “Miss Congeniality” with Sandra Bullock, I get to stay here and watch “Miss Congeniality” with Sarah Palin. Sheer heaven. It’s easy to see where this movie is going. It begins, of course, with a cute, cool unknown from Alaska who has never even been on “Meet the Press” triumphing over a cute, cool unknowable from Hawaii who has been on “Meet the Press” a lot. Americans, suspicious that the Obamas have benefited from affirmative action without being properly grateful, and skeptical that Michelle really likes “The Brady Bunch” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” reject the 47-year-old black contender as too uppity and untested. Instead, they embrace 72-year-old John McCain and 44-year-old Sarah Palin, whose average age is 58, a mere two years older than the average age of the Obama-Biden ticket. Enthusiastic Republicans don’t see the choice of Palin as affirmative action, despite her thin résumé and gaping absence of foreign policy knowledge, because they expect Republicans to put an underqualified “babe,” as Rush Limbaugh calls her, on the ticket. They have a tradition of nominating fun, bantamweight cheerleaders from the West, like the previous Miss Congeniality types Dan Quayle and W., and then letting them learn on the job. So they crash into the globe a few times while they’re learning to drive, what’s the big deal? Obama may have been president of The Harvard Law Review, but Palin graduated from the University of Idaho with a minor in poli-sci and worked briefly as a TV sports reporter. And she was tougher on the basketball court than the ethereal Obama, earning the nickname “Sarah Barracuda.” The legacy of Geraldine Ferraro was supposed to be that no one would ever go on a blind date with history again. But that crazy maverick and gambler McCain does it, and conservatives and evangelicals rally around him in admiration of his refreshingly cynical choice of Sarah, an evangelical Protestant and anti-abortion crusader who became a hero when she decided to have her baby, who has Down syndrome, and when she urged schools to debate creationism as well as that stuffy old evolution thing. Palinistas, as they are called, love Sarah’s spunky, relentlessly quirky “Northern Exposure” story from being a Miss Alaska runner-up, and winning Miss Congeniality, to being mayor and hockey mom in Wasilla, a rural Alaskan town of 6,715, to being governor for two years to being the first woman ever to run on a national Republican ticket. (Why do men only pick women as running mates when they need a Hail Mary pass? It’s a little insulting.) Sarah is a zealot, but she’s a fun zealot. She has a beehive and sexy shoes, and the day she’s named she goes shopping with McCain in Ohio for a cheerleader outfit for her daughter. As she once told Vogue, she’s learned the hard way to deal with press comments about her looks. “I wish they’d stick with the issues instead of discussing my black go-go boots,” she said. “A reporter once asked me about it during the campaign, and I assured him I was trying to be as frumpy as I could by wearing my hair on top of my head and these schoolmarm glasses.” This chick flick, naturally, features a wild stroke of fate, when the two-year governor of an oversized igloo becomes commander in chief after the president-elect chokes on a pretzel on day one. The movie ends with the former beauty queen shaking out her pinned-up hair, taking off her glasses, slipping on ruby red peep-toe platform heels that reveal a pink French-style pedicure, and facing down Vladimir Putin in an island in the Bering Strait. Putting away her breast pump, she points her rifle and informs him frostily that she has some expertise in Russia because it’s close to Alaska. “Back off, Commie dude,” she says. “I’m a much better shot than Cheney.” Then she takes off in her seaplane and lands on the White House lawn, near the new ice fishing hole and hockey rink. The “First Dude,” as she calls the hunky Eskimo in the East Wing, waits on his snowmobile with the kids — Track (named after high school track meets), Bristol (after Bristol Bay where they did commercial fishing), Willow (after a community in Alaska), Piper (just a cool name) and Trig (Norse for “strength.”) “The P.T.A. is great preparation for dealing with the K.G.B.,” President Palin murmurs to Todd, as they kiss in the final scene while she changes Trig’s diaper. “Now that Georgia’s safe, how ’bout I cook you up some caribou hot dogs and moose stew for dinner, babe?” |

| Posted over 4 years ago I wonder how Sarah will react when McCain loses his famous temper and calls her the same name he called his wife? You know the "c" word that all women just love. I'll stick with Obama and Biden. Anyone who thinks McCain/Palin will do less harm hasn't looked into it very far. Living in AZ with McCain as my "representative" I've come to expect him to represent only those who fund him. Palin is just another self-righteous power hungry bully who is hoping to turn the White House into her own private fiefdom like she did the governor's mansion in AK. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I think that this women sounds like she Is amazing she shot down corruption in Alaska, and she did it all while she was raising 5 children. She believes in lower taxes and doesn't think that the government should have to wipe our noses, because we don't have the sense to it ourselves. What is not to like. As for braces, I had to get my son braces did it on a payment plan, which the orthodontist worked out for us and we are by no means rich. |

| Posted over 4 years ago What I like most about the Democrats is their underlying evolutionary materialistic/dialectic humanistic philosophy from which all else they say and do flows. The main beauty of it is that ultimately humanity boils down to the survival of the fittest. One can survive either by hook or crook with neither necessarily being "superior" to the other. Yesterday we understood one way, today another, tomorrow it will be something else that science, politicians, gurus and others help us to understand. Who knows who the next Aristotle, Hegel, Darwin, Marx, B. Russell, Sartre, Mao, Che, Castro, or F. Crick, will be to help us with those next progressive steps in the random evolving of a universe truly chaotic without the wisdom of contextualization of humanoids of lesser or greater meaning than our ape ancestors. amazing? What shed did in Alaska with raising 5 childre? What she did for Alaska? What she did for Alaska is to support a group who wanted Alaska to secede from the United States and became its own country. Now, tell me, how patriotic and American is this?

| Posted over 4 years ago i vote for someone on merit and ethics. i will admit i dont care for either candidate. paulin seems ok but some of her views i dont share. obama should have picked hillary for his running mate. what obama lacks in experience hillary enhances. many of us like hillary no one candidate is perfect. i have a feeling though i am a democrat mc cain has a good chance of winning. his move to pick a female running mate was very calculated and smart. only time will tell. the corruption investigation into paulins alledged abuse of power may hinder mc cain. yet it may be just men trying to discredit her. we need a woman president we have had 200 years of men messing up our beautiful country . usa needs and could use a womans knowhow and touch. after all we as woman have done it all haven't we? just a thought. elizabeth_bourdony@yahoo.com |

| Posted over 4 years ago Are you guys who support Obama prepared for higher taxes? more government? More give aways? I know I am not, I am not thrilled with either one of the tickets but NO MORE TAXES PLEASE! ANd No CD I do not think women are stupid as a whole, I do not know too many women who will vote for Palin just because she is female although I have heard dozens say they would vote for hilary because she was female and that is just wrong. Color, sex, should not matter here. I wish Mickey Mouse was running, he would get most of the votes because he is a mouse. A busy RN is here |

| Posted over 4 years ago I am very disturbed that people chooses to attack on Obama. Obamas' message is very clear the election was never about him or Macain or Palin it is about the American people. Our nation has suffered enough, the republicans like to use scar tacticks and not logic and truth. The truth is, our children need education, without a plan for that who will build the bombs, tanks and machine guns to fight a war. I wonder who is the real celeberty know. Teen pregnancy, not a good look, family values and teen pregnancy not a good look on our nation at all. I wish I could speak to the media about that call me abully if you like I don't care. Obama wants to lead not name call, point fingers, or define ones character. So, do you want a leader (Obama) or a follwer (Macain). I as a American women would like some one to lead not ask me to follow, lead me to the right place. I vote for Oboma. |

| Posted over 4 years ago ...I'm sorry, Jenny, but this is the most ridiculous post I've read on this thread. "Believes in lower taxes....government nose-wipers?" The U.S. government PAYS people to live in Alaska, up to $1,200, not withstanding subsidized heating oil and artificially lowered consumer goods prices. The forestry industry is so heavily subsidized by the federal government that, compared to the profits we make from Alaska lumber, our tax dollars could pay every Alaska logger $40,000/yr to not ever cut down another tree. She advocates drilling in ANWAR and other Alaskan locations, which will be inviting Big Oil into the state, and then claims to stand up to the big guys. That woman has no idea what she's talking about. </quote>

| Posted over 4 years ago PS it's obvious that Palin's daughter really benefitted from Alaska's 'abstinence-only' sex education. THAT, my friends, is a massive waste of taxpayer dollars and a gross federal overencroachment from the party that claims to be all about Small Government. |

| Posted over 4 years ago marg: I agree that the politicians families/children should be off limits for attacks. However, like I posted on another discussion on this similar topic, Palin dragged her child into this. She had to know the kid was expecting or she is really stupid. Now, her daughter is suffering. And, someone wnats to put here in the number two slot in the country. The old man will most likely not make it for four years. His memory is already shot. He will forget where 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is.

| Posted over 4 years ago Visit http://www.thingsyoungerthanjohnmccain.com ... it's pretty funny!
I actually thought it was cool that Obama told the media that it's not their business to be messing with Palin's family, that it was irrelevant to the issues. But to suggest that her daughter made "the right choice" in getting married and keeping her fetus still implies that her daughter is a woman who MADE a choice; a right that the new Republican administration may try to whittle away at. It really makes me miss that the only thing I knew about Bush's daughters was that one liked to party :D |

| Posted over 4 years ago I believe what Sarah Palin actually shot down was an unarmed (in more ways than one) caribou while simoultaneously breastfeeding one of the kids. You know, bringing home the bacon and frying it up in the pan...who sang that, anyway. Maybe if Alaska had succeeded in seceding, there would only be half a topic to discuss. | Posted over 4 years ago Like I said in another forum on this topic. I am not into politics. But I vote Obama. Not because of his ability to speak and move a crowd. But for what he is actually saying. He wants it to be about America. He wants us to know that this campaign is to make America about "US" the people. Give us the ability to choose, whether that be abortion or keeping the child. Personally, I am pro-life, but I believe that in circumstances like rape, incest, and mothers who are drug addicts and the fetus could be affected the right to choose abortion should be there. I don't think that Palin being a woman should make women voters want to vote for McCain. I know that the biggest argument I have seen is dealing with raised taxes. I am not versed in all the campaign platforms this election, but I know that I don't want McCain as president. I want our country to be a better place for the children I have and their children after that. I want them to have choices and to know that the government has us in mind.
