The best specialty to start out in is the one that interests you the most. Many years ago you would hear “Do a year in med-surg first” that is now considered “old school”. The reason is that nursing, not unlike medicine, is becoming more and more specialized. There was a time when you could not get hired in ICU or the ER without med-surg experience first. That is no longer the case. Go for what you are interested in and you will be much happier.
