Posted over 4 years ago Should I try to obtain a job in a hospital/clinic to gain some kind of experience before I actually finish nursing school or is it best to go through school and study up on the different specialties? Confused!!! |

That all depends on you. I sort of got sick of nursing almost 24/7 between the job and school If you have an “easy” job in the hospital then go for it.

| Posted over 4 years ago Getting a job in a hospital, clinic, nursing home, etc. may give you experience but it's best to concentrate on your studies. Nursing programs are demanding. Most advisors recommend not working during the program but if you do, not to work more than 20 hours/week (at least that's the advice students got at my college). Like Ginny said, if you have an "easy" job in the hospital, then go for it. That way, you also have your foot in the door. It may make getting your first nursing position easier when you graduate. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Dear Confused, If you've never had any experience in a hospital setting before and have time to do so, I would recommend it. I ended up getting certified as an EMT and applied to a small hospital as an ER Tech. about 5-6 years ago and I learned so much! The nurses and the doctors were so helpful in educating me on new things I had never seen before and in the ER you are exposed to everything. Once I got my experience in the hospital I was able to see what nursing was about and have worked in a hospital setting ever since. Some of the nurses I worked with had never worked in a hospital before becoming a nurse and stated that they wish they would've done so. I am currently going to nursing school and some of my friends have never worked in a hospital and they seem to be fine about it. So the decision is up to you. I would only recommend it if you have time. If you do decide to work, only work 16 -24 hrs. You dont want to fall behind in your studies. |
