Posted over 5 years ago Most nurses from other countries seem to be coming from the Philippines. I read an article the other day, that says that demand for Filipino nurses is declining. Does everyone think this is accurate? In Las Vegas most new nurses are Filipino, so I'm questioning this article's info. |

Posted over 5 years ago I think it is accurate. I have heard alot about how some Filipino nursing schools, were cheating. I had a few of my friends at work, which were from Africa. They were going to a private nursing school. The Filipino teacher's there were giving the other Filipino students the answer's to the all the exams. They were wandering why they were just bearly making the grades. All the Filipino students were passing. All this activity has been reported to the State Boards of nursing, It is no surprise to me. About time something is done about this. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Posted over 5 years ago This is very surprising to me. We have a great group of Filipino nurses in my MICU. I find them to be very good bedside nurses, and they have taught me a trick or two. And, if one of the "posse" is on, you can count on that RN getting the difficult IV in for you. They have, as a group, shied away from leadership positions, with several of them stepping down to have families. And I find them less assertive with the docs, and I think that is cultural. Unfortunalely, they shy away from conflict with other nurses as well, and some bad behavior in other staff members was tolerated for a long time. Overall, I like them all very much, and recently, one was nominated for our "Nurse of the Year".

Posted over 5 years ago I heard that the NCLEX was held in the Philippines for the firs time ever this year. It surprises me a lot that this story was published. There seem to be more Filipino nurses now than ever - even here in CT.

| Posted over 5 years ago I was surprised too. I ask them did you actually see them cheat. My coworkers said that the students had a copy of the exact test, that accidently slipped out, one of the students notebook, on to the floor. My African friend said she cursed the whole entire school out, and request that she get a full refund. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. | Posted over 5 years ago The test cheating sounds like it could be an isolated incident. Have others noticed an increase or decrease in the number of Filipino nurses at your health care facilities? |

Posted over 5 years ago no, i am a filipino and more filipinos are being hired. in the place where i live there is a filipino that used to be a nurse living 2 blocks away from me and the other one is one block away from me. I heard of a lot of bad news regarding the exams but they always investigate things. reading these comments made me aware that some of you have good encounters with us and some heard of nasty things about us. i came from a private school of nursing, they are giving us practice questions from the past exams and sometimes even get questions from the nclex books but it does not mean that we can all pass or we are cheating. If we are given the copy of the exact test, how come 1/2 of the test takers failed? And if ever there are cheating occurences it may be isolated incident or just wanted to be in the headlines. Then how come Filipino Nurses are not banned in any countries?

Posted over 5 years ago I am a filipino and I am a nurse and no there hasnt been any decline in the hiring Filipino nurses. Many of the employers coming from different continents and I say continents, not only US are hiring Filipino nurses. Cheating is an isolated case where there was an investigation done and all that are involved are held liable and subjected to legal sanction. Other than that before we can step out of the country and work abroad we have to passed different exams which includes our local board, CGFNS and NCLEX plus IELTS or other english test and we are hired with at least 2-3 year experience in the hospital. My point is, when we work in other countries, we are not only qualified in terms of the papers but we are also qualified in terms of our skills. I would like to thank Oldnurse for appreciating us, Filipino Nurses.

Posted over 5 years ago Don't judge the book by its cover. If you find few people cheating, doesn't mean the whole community are cheaters. Don't generalized but individualized. It's like brainwashing from the facts you've received. When you saw and heard the news that some people of this community or country cheated, your next impression will be they are all cheaters. Nope, your level of thinking is critically low, keep your heels on the ground not off the ground. Well, though everybody's entitled for their opinions, but no one in this world is purely clean soul in his deeds and voice. Not even you, me or the priests, pastors or nuns. Those people who're cheating, for sure will feel their guilt at the end and their conscience will hunt them and correct their wrongdoings. I don't think everybody is hundred percent dedicated to their work as a nurse or cna's, some nurses bull other nurses or colleagues, sometimes manipulate things just to finish her work on time, leave some unfinished stuff on the next shift, and why? because some are busy talking with each other, go for smoke break and multiple tea or meal breaks. And when the time comes for end of shift report, you can see them in rush completing their work which would be impossible to be done. The only thing we have to keep in mind, do your job, keep a patient safe practice, patience and be compassionate to patients(though some are rude) and treat others with respect. If you are one kind of mean or rude nursing personnel/staff or any of the multidisciplinary team, then you don't belong to this industry. You should find other jobs that suits your attitude...Whether you are cheating or not, a filipino/asians, africans, europeans or local americans, everybody is equal. Avoid discrimination because we are all same capable of doing mistakes and despite of race who has mouth to eat, anus to poop and body that dies and decompose in same way.

Posted over 5 years ago it's sad to know the cheating incident happened in my country a few months ago. if you will follow the news [go to youtube.com to see if there are news coverage about the incident] the philippine government is really doing its best to investigate the case and hopefully send people, who are involved, to jail. for those who doesn't cheat in their whole lives can cast the first stone. but let me say this and it is true not because i am a filipino[i am now a US citizen too], i have never met anyone in the medical/nursing field who said bad things about filipino nurses. it seems to me, they/we are being judged with how we give our care to our patients and not with a piece of paper....isn't it CARING the reason why we are all here in NURSING?

Posted over 5 years ago christianwoman said: I'm not a Filipino, but I spent 3 years at the US Embassy in Manila, The US has had a contract with the Philippine government to supply the US with Nurses to deal with the nursing shortage. Filipina nurses also are sent to Saudi Arabia, Yemen, UAE, and a few European countries for 1-5 year contracts. For the most part, the nurses are very well qualified for their position and they must pass our written and skills exams. Until we can find a way to deal with the nursing shortage, we will be taking in nurses of foreign countries.
