I'm a little fuzzy as to what a forensic nurse does exactly.... Are they actually death investigators, like a coroner?

I think this term is used differently in individual states.  I had the priviledge to meet Dr. Michael Bodin the forensic medical examiner and he told me that forensic nursing was the way to go in the future.  He stated that nurses, especially ER nurses are the first to come in contact with a crime victim and many times their clothes, etc are removed leaving forensic evidence behind, and become contaminated.  There has been much talk about it in NY however I haven't seen any programs here for forensic nurses so I do not know what happened.

Let me know if you find out anything.

There are not any official Forensic nurse programs that I am aware of but there are many forensic nursing courses available both on campuses and on-line. Also contact your mgr for SANE nurse training which gives you experience in collecting evidence and providing court testimony in rape cases. Many hospitals now have a position in their facility for these RNs who sometimes work on an on-call basis.

Most forensic nursing programs, of varying disciplines, are spread throughout the east coast, mostly, and one program exists in Washington state. California, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada ~ I know nothing about, but check with the International Forensic Association (I think it's called) and it'll give you a run-down of the specifics and where in the world they're located. I've not seen any in the mountain west (where I reside ~ bummer), nor have I noticed any in the western states I've mentioned. I have noticed programs in the south east.

Good luck.

I just started taking a course through Kaplan that will give me a certificate in forensic nursing. I am so impressed and having a blast.Forensic nurses can do so much! They can work in the ED assessing victims, be certified Sexually assault nurses working at clinics and in the ED, work with police officers and do crime scene investigations, ride alongs, etc, there can be nurse coronors or forensic nurses may help assist the medical examiner with death investigations. Forensic nurses may aso assist their community in emergency planning, repond to disasters with mass casualties, and can work for an attorneys office recreating crime scemes, autopsy reviews, being an expert witness....The opportunities are endless and exciting! You can do a 9-5, be on call, or an independent contractor of your services.

I got to assist with an autopsy a couple of weeks ago and it was an amazing review. I got a full anatomy/physiology review by an amazing pathologist, got to hold and dissect the organs, truly a different way of nursing but will be a great career adventure. Let me know if anyone would like to know more!
