I've applied many times to each of my areas hospitals (Easton/Lehigh Valley Pa.) but have not gotten a part-time job as I'd love to have while working on my B.S.N. Any thoughts? I'd love to get the exposure to the environment, possibly get some tuition reembursement, and we really need a job for me soon.

What sort of a position are you applying for?  Some hosptials offer summer internship sort of programs.  Also, I knew a lot of other students while in school who got jobs as a UAP/Nurses' Aid/Tech in local hosptals.. they even had a position just for nursing students called SNA (student nurse assistant) which offered part time hours and a bit more flexible schedule than regular nurses aid.

I got a job while in school as a "safety coach" in a physical rehabilitation hospital connected to one of the larger hospitals.. I would do one-on-one supervision with traumatic brain injury patients who were confused/impulsive/combative and help redirect, keep them safe, engage them in appropriate activities, etc.  This was a lot like a "sitter" position but better since I could do more with the patients than just supervising.  If you can't find the above maybe you could see if there is something like this in your area?

I've applied for nurse support positions, as long as they didn't sound too beyond me from the description, but I've also applied many times simply for patient transport, feeling that such a position would be easy enough and would provide exposure to a hospital environment as well as a chance for tuition reembursement. Although my area hospitals have such jobs routinely available I've had zero luck, so I'm working at a deli instead, kind of frustrating.

Have you tried over in Jersey, in P'burg?  Specifically, Warren Hospital?  I'd keep applying, and applying.  If nothing else, you may be able to get a support job at a Nursing Home.  It's about getting your foot in the door, and sometimes you have to do a shift, or work at a place that's not your first choice.

The only thing I know that you can do is NOT give up....keep applying.  New positions may open up for you in the near future.  I just got a job at a hospital here where I live and I just kept trying.  It will happen for you.  Hang in there

Ha ha, I actually live in P'Burg and have applied there many times as well, although they have far fewer openings than Lehigh Valley Hospital and the others in the area. Yes, I'll keep applying but it does amaze me that i've gotten such a minimal response from applying so many times, given that I'm a nursing student and am not applying for positions that are beyond my ability.

Have you tried psychiatric hospitals?  I used to work at Horsham Clinic, which is probably about an hour away from Easton, but we used to get alot of patients from that area and we had alot of staff that used to live up there and commute.  You could apply for a mental health tech position - they take vital signs and do alot of things that a nursing assistant would do.  You could probably do groups and different things.  We had alot of nursing students working with us and as soon as we got to know them a liitle better, we would involve them in things we were doing and give them some experiences.  Just a thought.  They make around the same, maybe a bit more than the nursing assistants.

The market is a little bit tighter out there right now.  My husband works in Allied Health ARRT (r) and he's had a heck of a time getting a job after we relocated.  He had to take an agency position in the interim.

great suggestion- if no positions available take what you can get- often works directly or indirectly to getting a position you do want, where you want.

It will be much easier, when you graduate to apply for your intern permit, you can get tuition reimbursment, and first hire as a new grad. It is so hard to get a job as a tech, with experience. Good luck.
