Hey Ya'll!!!

I was just curious how difficult the math is in Nursing school? I am really bad when it comes to math and that is what scares me the most about nursing school and nursing. How often do you have to use your math skills  on a daily basis in nursing?

Thanks for all your input!!!

:)

You will use  math in nursing. You will do a good bit while you're in the nursing program, b/c they want to make sure you can calculate dosages. Working as a nurse the pharmacy does most of the calculation, but it is necesary to do some dosage calculations. We don't have to figure drip rate, b/c we use IVAC pumps, but there may be some facilities, or even certain drugs that can't run through a pump that you will have to calculate.

The math we do in our nursing program is not that hard once you understand it. We have to pass a math test every semester and score 85%. Calculation doses, calculation of IV's the gtt/min, regulation of an IV if its infusing too fast or too slow etc..If I can do it you can do it!

You will have no problem with it. It is just all differnt becuase of the medical terms etc. Trying to figure out IV drips if you have never seen an IV can be tough.

Iluvnursing,  you are a nurse and cannot spell different, God forbid you have to do dosage calculations when a first grade word is not spelled correctly.

It's not so much fun when the shoe is on the other foot now is it?

future nurse, conversions and basic algebra are the main types of math that nurses do. In your pharmacology course, they give very simple formulas one can use to determine iv rates, etc. It does take some getting used to, but if I can do math with dyslexia, anyone can do it. Hang in there! Good luck!

Math is not my strong point either, but I am getting use to it.  I am taking another algebra class and I got an A on my first test, so that is a big shock.   I have dyslexia too, mramsey, thanks for that encouragement.

IF I can di it ANYONE can. My math was really low on my ACT's. I have 1 term to go and I am doing fine with it. Keep it in your head that you can do it and have faith in yourself and you got it whipped.

I just wanted to add one more thing here so you can see where I came from with math.  In elementary school I just could not get math.  Had to transfer to a public school where I was placed in special ed.  In high school I got only through pre-algebra and didn't do so great in that class either.  I am shocked that I can do it now.  Many nurses I have talked to and worked with have told me that math is not their strong point.  So that is encouraging to me and hopefully encouraging to you too!

You'll do fine. When you begin to hang meds IV or by mouth, you'll begin to connect what you've learned in school with the real world.  I think the hardest part of nursing is nursing  school.  Everything is so political. You will bond with other students and go through it together. Once you're out in the real world you will select a speciality and learn meds for that unit. One day you will be teaching someone else.

I didnt find the math difficult at all.  There are several different formulas but once you learn those you really can calculate everything you need too.  So focus on the formulas!   Good Luck!

I did math in Medical assisting.  When I was in school I got the second highest grade on the math test.  We used proportions mainly and I could handle that.  My biggest problem is doing math and not knowing what I am going to use it for, or how I am going to use it. as a nurse.  In my last algebra class (which was college algebra), I had no clue how I was suppose to use that in real life, especially in nursing.  My teacher told me that most of what we were learning is used to design satellite dishes or in electricity.  What do I care about that in nursing school?  I think basic stuff I can handle.

I use to have a couple of web sites that had the nursing math info.  .  I'll go look and see if its still in my computer.  I've been a nurse for about 13 years and I still hate math.   I also had a decent clinical calculations book that helped too.   There is no way I'd get rid of that.........after I graduated from college  I did the selling my text books back to the bookstore thing..........kept my med surg book, psych book, and math book.   Every other year I get a new lippincott publication on new drugs out on the market.............its amazing the new stuff that have come out since '97.    Unless my hubby deleted the site, it should still be there.   Hopefully its the one with practice tests...........it really helped bunches.   Good luck.
