I've never really given much thought, but recently it's seemed like more of a possibility. I'm working on my MSN currently, but I think a NP doctorate would be really interesting.

Has anyone done it? What kind of advice would you give to someone considering it? Do you know of any good programs?

I've been tinkering with idea for some time in the future but am not sure of the real benefits of doing a DNP. I can't see going back to school for another 2-3 years and not reap the benefits of higher pay. No one (doctors) in my area would pay higher wages to a NP just for the title. Until we get prescriptive authority and independent practice in FL, I won't be doing it myself any time soon. I know that the University of Florida has started a DNP program and that Florida State University is discussing plans to do so as well..

I am just starting my BSN nursing courses. In one of our first class days they said that by 2015 a DNP will be required in the state of Ohio in order to be a NP. That was very discouraging for me since my ultimate goal was to become a PNP. Under the new guidelines I would have to first finish my bsn, then get a masters, then the dnp before I could actually practice as a NP. I'm not sure I want to spend the next 10 years in school. At that rate I could just go to medical school! Any thoughts on this? Has anyone else heard that they will be doing this?

A DNS has been talked about as the requirement for some time. I do not see that happening. There is still and will be to much of a shortage. They had tried to make BSN required for an RN and it did not fly. One state tried to eliminate LPNs. Did not fly. I am looking for an online class for the DNS>

I am currently in the DNP program at UMass Amherst. I love it.
Check out the specialties available to you in the programs. My program is Public Health Leadership, but there are two other options, family health and psych. I looked up not only the kinds of programs (phd vs. DNP), I looked at what kinds of research were ongoing with faculty, how clinicals where handled, who was eligible for licensing exams, which exams, and whether the program was seeking accreditation.

I am really happy in my program, I think the key is finding a good fit for you.
