What should you do, if you are caught in a "rip tide"?I had to face that question while I was on vacation in France many years ago. While swimming off the coast of France many years ago, I was suddenly caught by a strong "rip tide" that relentlessly carried me out to sea. What is a "rip tide"? A "rip tide", is an exceptionally strong current, usually the result of an incoming or outgoing tide, that overwhelms a swimmers ability to swim against the same. It can result in the swimmer being carried by the same far out to sea and the death of the swimmer by drowning. I was terrified when this occurred! In any case, I deceided to gradually with with the current rather than fight it. I swam gradually away from what I thought was the center of the current. As I did the same, the current, gradually became weaker. I angled my swim so that, although I didn't combat the current, I gradually approached a distant portion of the sea shore. Using the same, I reached shore! Remeber! Do NOT fight a "rip tide"! Try to both swim away from the same and to approach any shore line at the same time. It worked for me.

I practically grew up in the (Atlantic) Ocean, learning to swin at age 4. My oldest son is a commercial diver.

Just let it carry you out, then swim parallel to shore. You will be out of it and can then swim back in. The main thing is to not panic and literally "go with the flow."

I only swim where I can see the bottom of the ocean.  (Carribean)  I don't even really swim, I just love the water, boating and sea-doo'in.....

MAMADAWN - Chickens don't swim anyway, and sharks don't eat chickens; I don't think!

The advice to swim parrell to the shore is what we were always taught growing up. I spent as much time as possible at the beach, my parents loved the ocean and passed that love on to all of their children. I learned to swim in the Atlantic ocean. I even caught baby sharks when fishing as a teen.

I absolutely love the beach. Love body surfing in the waves.
