I recently read that less med students are taking the general practitioner/internist route because they want to make more money. Are you finding that nurses are trying to specialize more than they used to as well (i.e. peds, heme, etc)?

Nurses have been specializing for a long time. That is why I find the adivse to spend one year in med surg to decide what you want to do old schoo thinking.

CD, I agree with you on that one.  I knew I wanted to specialize in the OB field and I was fortunate enough to get hired into an OB department right after graduation.  It is a challange being a new RN and having to learn a speciality field at the same time, but I love it and it never gets boring...I guess I thrive under stress..ha ha  I did, however, participate in a Med-Surg extern program while I was in ADN school and it did help me to get the basics down which does make the transition into a speciality area a little easier..
