Has anyone worked as a consultant or as a subcontractor?  What is your experience with this?  I started a year ago and would like to network with others in similar circumstances.

I'm a consultant, in a specialized area - regulatory matters. I help long term care and assisted living facilities stay in compliance with State and federal regulations.

I'm on the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services list of temporary managers. When a facility needs a consultant or temporary administrator because of a bad survey (inspection), the State can either recommend or direct that they hire me.

Right now I'm the temporary administrator at an assisted living facility. It's full time, but most of my assignments only last a few days, reviewing charts or giving inservice training or seminars. I enjoy consulting because I can make my own hours and I'm my own boss.

What type of consulting do you do? I haven't been doing this for very long (about a year), and one thing I don't know much about is networking, to get my name out there. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

I'm also interested in this topic. I took the Vickie Milazzo course to become a Legal Nurse Consultant several years ago. While it was a decent program, I have not been able to do anything with it because I can't seem to attract the market for it. I'm curious to know if others out there are in the same boat as I am. If so, at least I'll have a sink or swim buddy (sink in my case since I don't know how to swim!)

Thank you LaywerRN, I was thinking of doing something similar, as this is not too different from what I did at my former job as director at a managed care plan.  I think my problem is I have a lot of different experience, like so many of us, but I can't always turn it into a job or figure out how to market/price myself.

Thanks also faithfulgirl, I was thinking of taking the Vikki Millazo course but I was wondering if there was any call for it once you had taken the course.  I am in Syracuse, NY, but it is a small-medium city and I am not sure I could make a living at this.

Thanks for the website -this is terrific!
