Second Career in Nursing-How did you know

For the past year I have been considering going back to school to get an Accelerated BSN in Nursing. I have two other degrees and a 12 year first career where I rose to the ranks of Vice president. I recently got laid off from this position, but truth be told I was considering the change even before that happened. I even started taking pre-requisite classes online (Nutrition and Sociology).

My question is how did you know this was a good second career for you? I mean I have always wanted to try it but not sure I would be good at it. I like the idea of the stability of the job and helping people and making a difference, and I think I am skilled for it (excellent with people, efficient, hardworking, dedicated and multitasking). I am still paying back student loans from my first two degrees I am not sure I can afford a third loan. Is it better to get an Associates degree, start working and then go back for a BSN? Does anyone know the best way to get some insight into this career switch? Are their assessments or organizations taht might help? Would anyone suggest volunteer work at local hospitals?

I would love to get some feedback.

PS-I'm 36, unmarried with no children....but would really like to have a personal life at some point........I get that this choice could postpone that again...But just throwing that out there.

I too, am looking at obtaining a BSN, I have a Bachelors in Sociology.  So any info would be greatly appreciated.  While I am paying back student loan presently, I can now use my husband's GI bill (well part of it, the rest is going to my step daughters!!! I am excited about that)

Hi.  It all depends on what is most important to you.  Who knows, you might meet someone special when you least expect even when you're busy.  I met my hubby when I was working full time and going to school full time.  My girlfriend dragged me out of the house one weekend and I met my future hubby whom I had no interest in at first because I was too busy.  He kept pursuing me and we've been together ever since (13 yrs).  Try to get out every once in a while for a break.  :  )

I have my B.S.B.A.  and still owe on student loans.  Due to the fact that I have two kids to support along w/ my hubby I have to go the ADN route first and rely on the new salary to help pay down debts.  Then after a couple of years working as an RN-ADN, I may pursue a BSN if the hospital will help pay for the tuition costs.   Also, I want to be an OR nurse - I don't think I need a BSN unless I want to go into management.  Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...
