Posted over 4 years ago I am a current student at Quinsigamond Community College and have been taking my pre-reqs there for about two years. This January I will be sending out some applications to some schools I wish to attend in the Fall of 09. The schools I am interested in are as follows: UMass Dartmouth, Fairfield University, University of Rhode Island, UMass Lowell, Salem State, Becker, and Regis. I will admit that in highschool I slacked off big-time. I wasn't into my studies and really didn't care about much but my social life. I am a changed person! I have a dream and I want to go for it. The problem is my GPA will be about a 3.0 by the time my applications will be sent out and i have been told by so many people that it has to be higher higher higher. My question pretty much is HOW DO I GET INTO A SCHOOL. I want this so so so bad and I feel that time is slipping away! I am only 20 years old but I feel so stuck. Is it really all about your GPA? Are there any volunteer programs that would look good on an application? Also, if anyone has any details/advice/knowledge on any of the schools I mentioned above please give me your input. I feel like I am closer and closer and then someone shuts you down. I need a boost! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Honestly, your GPA isn't very competitive. However, only 1/3 to 1/2 of points accrued in the application process are academically related. Your entrance essay is about a third. Write about how you want to altruistically help people (they eat that up) and how hard you work. Make sure it's perfect. As for university's, where you go to school for your baccalaureatte doesn't really mean much (most employers put more stock in experience than university) and why anyone would want to pay 3-5 times more for their education when a state uiversity gives pretty much the same education is beyond me (it's where you go for your master's and doctorate that counts). There is the "back door" of going into getting admitted in a nursing program. Take your core classes first and either be undeclared or be a different major. Take anatomy and physiology, medical microbiology, chemistry 1+2, pathophysiology, sociology, psychology and other pre-requisites and make sure your GPA stays up. That will give you a huge advantage in getting into programs. Good luck. |
