Conspiracy Theory?

Posted over 4 years ago This is related to another topic "nursing shortage". I might just be a conspiracy theorist, but I too started thinking about all this talk about a nursing shortage the other day. Here's some questions I have.... How does anyone know that in 2012 or 2020 (whatever it is now....it keeps changing) that we'll have a serious shortage of nurses? "They" keep saying that the seasoned nurses will be retiring then (all at the same time?) and healthcare will be in need of a lot of nurses, but I see mostly young, fairly recent grads in hospitals. This nursing shortage talk has been going on for a while now, and it seems to have led many to pursue nursing as a career. At some point, aren't we going to see an oversaturation of the market? Is there someone behind all this "nursing shortage" business to purposely oversaturate the market and thus drive wages down for nurses???? Hmmmmmm..... Just my thoughts....please tell me if I'm bein' crayzay! I won't be offended.....promise....because I hope all my suspicions aren't true. ~ Melissa |

| Posted over 4 years ago I don't know Melissa. I've been a nurse for (gulp) 25 years. Sometimes I do think there is a shortage. Reason being is I'm doing agency right now, and agency nursing is booming. Usually when a shortage of nurses slows, the agencies start declining. I have not seen that. The hospital I'm working in now is severly short staffed. Half the time the nurses are agency. I worked with an agency nurse today on the unit I was on. Yesterday, I worked with 2 agency nurses. If you count me that's 3 agencies. I don't recall seeing that earlier in my career. I contracted at another ER in Houston back in August, and half the ER staff were like me. All temporary and contract. It was kinda cool, b/c we could commiserate on how crappy the regular staff treated us. Needless to say, last I heard, they are dying right now cause all the nurses they crapped on, left. Including me. Karma bites you every time. Claire Kruszka |
