Posted about 3 years ago I've been a facility Administrator for years - I would never, ever reject an applicant for one bad reference. Only if there was a pattern. Also, in ths day and age previous employers generally will verify dates of employment and job title - not specific disciplinary info - they would be subject to too many lawsuits. Of course, they can give info informally if they want to take a chance.

Posted almost 3 years ago I, too am a nurse in Oregon and have been black-balled. I was recruited from a different part of the country and my life has been a living hell since, I signed a contract for 2 years and tried to do the best I could to make things better and lasted 6 years. As in the first poster, others knew about my impending termination before I did but I have been able to take sick leave for the past 10 weeks (and boy, did I need it! A nervous wreck) and plan to resign before I am scheduled to go back. Since my area of practice is very specialized, I have been unable to get a job because I haven't been practicing at the bedside (so to speak) for 6 years. I have been a RN for 28 years and can work circles around most of the nurses I know. Worked in woman's health, ob, level ll nsy, L/C; OR; PACU; SDS; family planning, etc. But since my "speciality' has kept me quarrentined (thanks to the union I couldn't work in another job code) I am unemployable as well as dodging the question of why I am leaving my present position and won't use them as a reference, Am I destined to be a greeter at Wal Mart?

Posted over 2 years ago I too was black-balled at Cleveland Clinic Regional Eastern Region where I had worked there for 2 years as a STNA. Since day 1 my nurse manager would constantly tell me to go to another hospital, or transfer to another floor. When that did'nt work she sent all the nurses to attack me as well as aides, so I started to defend myself and would go to Human Resource to file a complaint but they would do nothing. I would get wrote up even if I was not at work, I was getting false complaints she claimed from staff who did'nt even work on our unit. Then one day I asked if I could apply for the Unit Secretary postion on our unit and she told me I did'nt have enough experience but gave the job to a 22 year old aid who had no secretarial experience at all just to keep from me getting the job. So after that I asked if I could apply for the PRN position on our unit and she hired someone outside of the heath system just so I could'nt get that job either. I would apply to other units but she would tell them things like I have a bad attitude and gets lot of complaints I mean anything to make me just quit, until one day she fired the new girl who had the PRN position cause she left on her break for 2 hours and told me I can then have the job. Well of course, once I was PRN I would'nt work the unit just other units in the facility and she would come to the other units I would work on to harrass me there as well. Well on 3 occasions I caught my boss coming from Human Resources and I knew she was trying to dig something on me but I was'nt worried cause my background was clean, so one day my manager had the secretary to call me to come on the unit to empty some of my email so that she could send me an email which of course did'nt make any sense, to give me a large envelope from Human Resources stating " It has come to my attention that you do not have a High School Diploma on file". By the time she gave me the letter it was 4:30 and Human Resources was closed so I was going to contact them first thing in the morning to take care of it, but I did'nt have a copy of my Diploma from the year 1984 and they told me that the high school I listed on my application said I never attended the school. So I went to the school and got my transcript and brought it to her and she said I could'nt go back to work until I brought in my transcript just to contact me 2 months later to tell me I would not be coming back.

Posted over 2 years ago Unfortunately blacklisting is almost impossible to defend against. One must have a clear cut case handed to them on a platter in order to prevail in court. Most attorneys will advise thus and limit their involvement to sending a cease and desist letter to the offending party. Sad when this simple request is ignored and one goes years without being able to reenter their field, if at all. Best to learn that people can not be trusted and to just move on.

| Posted over 2 years ago What an interesting topic. I always think, if there are people out there with practices like this, well, what goes around, comes around, if you know what I mean. Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

Posted almost 2 years ago I HAVE BEEN A NURSE FOR 18 YEARS AND I LOVE WHAT I DO. I AM A BLACK MAN WHO IS ALSO GAY. AT MY LAST JOB IN THE BRONX NY BRONXPARK NH I WAS A AGENCY NURSE FULL TIME PLUS I DID OVERTIME A LOT. IF ANY NURSE WANTED TO CALL IN THAT NURSE WOULD CALL ME. MY JOB HAD VIDEO CAMERAS EVERYWHERE. THE MORNING NURSE DID NOT LIKE ME AND SAID THAT I DID NOT CLEAN UP AFTER MYSELF. THAT WAS NOT TRUE CAUSE I DID NOT CLEAN UP AFTER NO OTHER NURSE. SO ONE DAY I FELT KINDA BAD ABOUT LEAVING MY FLOOR DIRTY. SO I DECIDED TO CLEAN UP AND TAKE OUT THE TRASH IN THE NURSING OFFICE ON THE 6TH FLOOR. KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE VIDEO CAMERAS EVERYWHERE. AS I TOOK OUT GARBADGE OUT OF THE NURSING OFFICE AND BROUGHT THE GARBADGE INTO THE NURSES STATION. A BAG OF COCAINE FELL FROM UNDER THE EMPTY SODA BOTTLE. WHAT WAS I TO DO THE CAMERA SAW EVERYTHING. I TURNED THE BAG OF COCAINE IN TO MY DIRECTOR OF NURSING MRS ADELE BUSANTE AND SHE DELIVERS THE BAG OF COCAINE TO THE ADMINISTRATOR SCOTT MAYIR. OK NOTHING HAPPENED. SO A FEW WEEKS LATER ANOTHER NURSE FINDS A BAG OF COCAINE IN THE BATHROOM OF THE SAME UNIT ON THE 6TH FLOOR. WE HAD A MEETING IN THE OFFICE IN WHICH NOTHING POSITIVE CAME OUT OF THIS MEETING. SCOTT MAYIR STATED WE KNOW YOU HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM SO COME FORWARD AND GET HELP AND MEANWHILE YOU PROTECT YOU PENSION AND YOUR JOB BECAUSE YOU ARE A UNION MEMBER. NOBODY CONFESSED. ONE CNA WROTE A WRITTEN STATEMENT SAYING THAT SHE SEEN CARMEN COSME HAVE WHITE POWDER UNDER HER NOSE. AFTER THAT EPISODE WHEN A NURSE CALLED IN SICK NOBODY CALLED ME. I HAVE NOT WORKED IN A MONTH NOW. UNEMPLOYMENT IS UNDER INVESTIGATION. I HAVE HAD THREE JOBS OFFERS TELL ME THAT THEY DONT WANT ME. I CALLED THE STATE TO COMPLAIN FOR ADELE BUSANTE TAKING ME OFF THE SCHEDULE PERMANTELY. ALSO ADELE BUSANTE FOUGHT AGINST ME GETTING UNEMPLOYMENT. EVERY LITTLE THING THAT HAPPENED ON THE JOB THEY TRIED TO BLAME ME FOR AND USE ME AS A SCAPEGOAT. I AM AGGRESSIVELY LOOKING FOR WORK.

Posted about 1 year ago I'm sorry to hear this for you. It is awful and I know from experience. I've been an LPN for 15 years and never have I been disciplined no write ups or med errors not even one! I started a new job at a level 3 facility in vt I loved it. It was laid back and the staff seemed nice. Well I was trained by an LPN for 3 days then I was on my own on the floor with 4 aids the fourth day. I had been to an I service where they told the nurses it was our responsibility to make sure our aides were following the dress code. Apparently they were becoming sloppy wearing jeans and sweatpants. Also they discussed the cell phone policy and how we went about disciplining. First time caught using one was a verbal warning second was a written warning and third could result in termination depending on the circumstances. Well that 4th night two aids wore jeans. I very nicely offered to bring them in some of my extra scrubs. The fith night I walked in I was met by the DNS and fired!! She told me several aids said I was using my cell phone all night and didn't properly pass the meds. Well I didn't even have a cell at the time and when I tried to explain that they were lying about me and I could prove it she said "u really expect me to believe u over an employee who has been here 12 years" then told me to get out or I'd get escorted out!!! I wanted to take legal action but just moved on. Then the worst part of it all was that they ended up reporting me to the board of nursing for diciniplary action!!! I'm so nervous about this like I said in 15 years I've never even been written up. What do I do???
