Hello All..
I am new here and my name is Sasha. I am thinking of trying to get into the nursing program in my college. I do have a felony conviction, possession with intent to distribute. Long story short, I was in a very abusive relationship ten years ago at college and was arrested along with my boyfriend for drug possession.

The house was rented in my name so that is why I was given a possession charge. I never had any jail time and it's been ten years. I have two children now, back in school and trying to find out if I can go into the nursing program.

Please don't send me messages about what I did wrong. I am now with my daughter's father for ten years, have a daughter with special needs, and am looking to get into this field and secure a future.

Please tell me if you all think I have a chance or not with this felony. The charge came from another state from which I live now.

I live in Lehigh Valley , PA.

Hi, prissynikki
My name is Demetrice, also known as cuttie. I think , before you attempt to start any nursing program. You should go online to your states Boards of Nursing, to see what are their
felony procedure policies. I know in the state of California, it has to be 10 years to be considered off your record, but sometimes the State Boards will investigate your record, which means, they will take along time to clear you. I had a classmate, that could not start her nursing program, because the State Boards took so long to clear her, she also had a felony from her past. Each state is different. Good Luck!

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Hi Sasha,

You may also want to consider having you records sealed or expunged. This means that the conviction will not show when they investigate your background, it is 100% legal ,you can get the documents you need to statrt the process at your local Court house (clerk of the court office).

Good luck and God Bless

Sasha, you can start a nursing program, and even graduate with a felony conviction. Nursing schools, as a general rule, do not do criminal background checks.

But the Board of Nursing does, in all states now. Policies on granting licensure vary from state to state. As a general rule, Boards are not inclined to license anyone with a conviction on a violent crime. Drug possession is a different story; they may be more lenient. Check with the PA board and see if there is a time limit on the conviction. As a felon, there may or may not be. Getting your record expunged could help since it's been such a long time, or applying for a pardon from the Governor. That would also restore your voting rights, btw.

If the Board does take issue with your conviction, you can request a hearing before the Board to plead your case. They may want you to undergo a treatment program and be supervised when working with controlled substances for a period of time. I would get the issue resolved in writing before applying to nursing school.
