Dole foods just recalled their lettuce. Spinach, one of the healthiest foods, caused dozens of deaths last year. The avian flu, Mad Cow disease, even the food we feed our pets is a constant threat to health.

Does this simply mean more work for nurses in hospitals or is there a serious problem?

Listening to the news could be bad for your health. I think I will not eat any spinach or lettuce for a long time.

It was terrible not eating spinach for so long last year! I used to eat it religiously and then after the scare it sort of fell off my list of most-eaten-food.

I am a vegetarian so any poultry or beef diseases are no problem for me! :)

I do eat some fish though.... DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? I AM SCARED ABOUT MERCURY POISONING!!!!!! :/

Mecury is present in your large fish, like tuna. You eat just a little tuna do you?

I hate listening to the news. Anymore it seems like no matter what we eat, at one time or another is bad for us.

But I still do refuse to eat spinach and will for a long long time

Remembers me ( TV news documentary) Vegitables specially Ground Tumors one like Pottatos, Cabages. Cuting and tested in a Lab, that changed litmus papers to read some chemical contents used in Fertiliers. Means are we consuming Organic Chemicals in our food ??.

You know oldnurse, that's a good idea. My stepfather use to have a small garden in our back yard. He grew lettuce, tomatoes, and hot chilli peppers. I'm use to fresh grown things. I come from the old school too. I think if you feed the cat organic cat food, that will be good fertilizer!!!!

I eat tuna about once a week and salmon twice a week. Does anyone know if this is too much fish?

No it is not. I think you will have to eat it on a daily basis. Like I said, Mercury is high in your large fish.

I had a garden this past summer with three different types of lettuce, spinich, carrots, onions, potatoes, peppers and corn.   I ate well this summer and put a lot up for the winter.

It cracks me up when i see Americans worrying about how safe their food is...YOu need to travel more... Our food is without a doubt the safest on the planet.

Our food may not be the safest, but I've lived in third world countries, and just using the local water to wash the vegetables gave me dysentery.  Couldn't get a mixed drink in a bar because the lousy sanitation requirements resulted in contaminated drinking glasses. We're very lucky here, but very few realize it.
