Ok, so here's my dilemma....I am a medic.  I LOVE trauma, I LOVE being on the bus, getting called out without knowing the actuality of the scene, I LOVE being trained and able to help people who are in emergency situations, I LOVE thinking on my feet and the challenge of emergency care.  I left EMS because where I live it is very difficult to find a full time, paying job.  I decided to go back to nursing school, which I'm doing now, in the hopes of becoming a trauma nurse....perhaps even a flight nurse.  With the current state of the nursing program I'm starting to become incredibly discouraged about the possibilities of even becoming a nurse.  Recently I have been considering the possibilty of returning to EMS.  I understand it may be difficult to secure employment, but once I do I will fine.  I didn't go into this field to become rich anyway, I did it for the love of trauma and emergency medicine.  Any advice from any seasoned trauma nurses or medics?

ok! well, i am a nursing student right now, about to graduate in May 09. I would love to go into trauma nursing. My first med-surg clinical was on the trauma unit of a level 1 trauma hospital...awesome!!. I dont know how the RN program in your area works, i know it can be difficult to get entrance because of the lack of instructors for all the student applicants. But I think it is totally worth it to keep trying! I just went to an event that celebrated the 25th anniversary of our Careflight and got to talk with the flight nurses and see the helicopters. It was SSOOOOOOOOO coool!!!!!!!  If this is your passion, you just have to follow your heart....

In my program, they are always teling us that the best thing for us as new nurses isa to work a med-surg floor for a year to get lots of experience. Thats good advice, but if you already know wha you want to do, it kinda seems like a waste of time. I just read in a journal that due to the nursing shortage, hospitals are creating new nurse residency programs in specialty areas. If you can get through school, there will definatly be a place for you in this field. Besides, the shortage wont even peak until 2011. I wish you good luck!!!!!!

owensrm2, I couldn't agree with you more!  nurseaisha, if you can stick with it, there will definitely be a place for you in trauma nursing.  I am a nurse recruiter at a hospital in Minneapolis, MN and we are always looking for RN's Trauma/Critical Care.  Good luck to you, and let me know if I can ever answer any questions!

Follow your dreams I know there is a definite shortage of flight trauma nurses. You have to be a paramedic as well as an rn in most states.

So you are already halfway there. it is hard but the rewards  are definitely worth it.  Good luck and hang in there . You can achieve if you only believe

Thank you for all the awesome advice and encouragement.  It is so great to be able to network with others who understand the struggle.  NurseRecruiter, thank you especially!  COming from someone who seeks out nurses for employment its good to know I will be able to stay in the field I love.  Maybe I'll move to MN when I graduate!!

I'm in the same boat.  I studied to be a firefighter/EMT for years until I was hit by a car and injured my back.  I still want to be a trauma nurse but I got my BA in psychology.  How do I go about becoming a nurse?  Do I have to go back into the undergraduate studies because I don't have any money to borrow as one.  I am getting too old to start over.  I only have one problem I need to work with,  I can not deal with the abuse of children.  I stopped watching the news because of that.  Is nursing the way to go  for me?

I think its a good idea to do at least a year or 2 in med surg because of the foundation you'd get on the floor if your a new nurse.  Since you have EMT experience you might could shave a bit of time off, but I would still recommend some floor time!  .  Aisha..........you'd be so cool in the ER.........whatever facility you end up in will be fortunate to have you!

We only have one heart, take care of it!
