I've been a SAHM for 12 years now and am planning on going back to work soon. I am expecting my RN license in the mail any day now and would love to work in L&D. Almost all advertised L&D positions in my area are requiring at least a year of L&D experience. How do people get this experience if you can only get a job if you already *have the experience?

I've done 2.5 years of OB/GYN and one year of Home Health before I had my kids. But even that was so long ago that I'm not sure it counts for anything.

You need to try and get a current job in POst partum or nursery first and volunteer to go back to l and D get to know everyone and let them get to know you, now you need many more cert than when I started in labor and delivery in 1980. Now you also need your NRP and Pals, Adv fetal monitoring, ACLS, and most places have other requirements as well. It is not impossible but you need to get your skills updated and work your way in. Just my opinion but I worked 15 years l and D as well as NICU.

A busy RN is here

Would you get these certifications while already employed or would I need to get them before even applying for a L&D position?

It depends on the facility.  Some places will require you to have at least some before you start, others, within 6 months of hire.

Your best bet is probably to find a place that has a separate post partum unit, not just LDRP (Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum), and work as a mother baby nurse. .  I started out as an LPN, worked mother-baby, obtained my RN license, then requested a transfer to LDRP to cross-train.   Best of success to you.

To all the experienced L&D nurses:

How likely is it to get a job in L&D as a new grad?  I will have my BSN in June 09, and am interested in mother/baby, L&D, or eventually NICU.  I'm just not sure what path to take after graduation!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. =)

Hi, I'm the OP and just want to update this. I got my license in the mail about 4 weeks or so ago, applied for a L&D position and have an interview in a few days. I'm totally excited about it. Wish me luck!
