Importance of Walking...

Posted over 4 years ago Walking can add minutes to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000/month. My grandpa started walking 5 miles a day when he was 60..now he is 90 years old and we do not know where he is. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. The only reason I would take up walking is to hear heavy breathing again. I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing... I joined a health club last year, spent $400 bucks, haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there! Every time I hear the dirty word "exercise" I was my mouth out with chocolate. I DO have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. the advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say "well, she looks good doesn't she" If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,...just getting over the Hill! We ALL get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That is MY story and I'm sticking too it. Every time I start to think too much about how I look, I just find a happy hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine! Hope this made you all laugh, laughter is a good thing. Hugs patty

| Posted over 4 years ago Walking, or any aerobic actiivity of any type is the true fountain of youth. The American Heart Association guidelines for cardiac rehab teach patients that if you get your heart rate up at least 20 beats over your resting heart rate for about 20-30 min daily, you improve the quality of the actual heart muscle, the blood vessels suppying your heart, and lowers your blood pressure. The cardiologists I work with require an exercise stress test to figure the patients true target heart rate, the ones who can not tolerate a treadmill due to other conditions, can use the 20 beats over the resting heart rate as a target with MD approval. Medicare will fund the majority of the cost of a 12 week long cardiac rehab program on an outpatient basis as long as the patient had an approved diagnosis <MI, CAD with intervention: stent,CABG> and even some chf patients if their EF is low enough. It's amazing to see a patient's EF go from 20% - 75% after just 12 weeks. They dont always do that well, but it's so rewarding to see these patients endurance and self confidence improve! When they graduate from the program, alot of them think "I've graduated, I'm cured!", but CAD is a diagnosis that just wont go away like magic. It takes lifestyle changes to make your risks of a cardiac episode improve: diet, exercise, quit smoking, etc.... Good topic AbusyRN2go..........I love the heart! We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie |
