Posted over 4 years ago Im a very old guy now and was considering a career change. I am a plumber and with this crazy economy I dont think getting my contractors is sucha great idea.,. Im a old guy now , im 25 and im thinking about trying to become a nurse. I really do not want ot clean out bed pans " doesnt really bother me , but repair plumbing would pay ALOT more than hr wage" i dont really want to have to wash clothes or anything like that. lol sorry my sentences are that of a 6 yr old, but i havent really written anything in a very long time . Um high school i never applied myself , i scraped by with a 3.5 ...,,,Um on the asvab @17 i scored a 93 " but im a retard now :( " If i were to go to college i would seriously have to relearn everything that i forgot in highschool ... I was thinking about becoming a nurse, and after i get a job trying to become a doctor ... Is that possible ? can a nurse be a doctor ? I read that they dont really study the pre reqz for becoming a doctor , and i also read that im a failure and i will never be able to be a doctor due to the fact im too old , its expensive , you have to be a genius...you get the idea... I have thought about doing so many other things , but being a doctor kinda fits my attitude..Not sure if its a pipe dream ,or if it could actually happen... Im not sure how loans go , but i would have to borrow so much from the goverment to even try this that if it didnt happen i would prolly be screwed... I really dont have the money for college , and even though i would work full time or part time while in school i know i could never pay for schooling ... Give me the cold hard truth please...Thanks

| Posted over 4 years ago It's been said that older students actually do better in college (I am only referring to college not any type of degree study). Older students usually have more patients and they are there to study and not worried if they have the latest fashions or what party they are going to. I know a lot of people who are going back to school to start a second career. I'm 42 yrs old and am back in school. |

| Posted over 4 years ago im not blowing smoke anywhere , im being dead serious... I mean i know that if i wanted to get your basic old 4 yr degree than i wouldnt really have that much trouble .. I could work and go to school with no problem , but yes i kinda do feel that im pretty old to just now be starting to go to college .... I kinda figured that if you were going to go to college you would go right after highschool . I would actually rather becoem a doctor , and the bed pan thing was kind of a joke , but not really...Hhmmm say i did do my first 4 and then i got excepted to med school , i would still have to work or else i wouldnt be able to go to school ... Say i did try and become a doctor , i would be somewhere like 35 before i would actually be a doctor , and prolly around 40 before my pay started getting high from what i have read online .. dont they pay more for your exp ? but then again i could work 20 years and have my retirement set .. being a nurse would be kewl i guess , but i would rather make more money than that ..... I know alot of repair plumbers who work solo and on a good year they gross 200-300k..Thats ALOT of cash to be making a year..;. I almost sorta figured that if i did graduate med school @ say 35 or 33 or w/e , would i be able to get a good job somewhere ? Even though ill be kinda old ? or is that how everyone does it , do most doctors start off late ? I mean i have read ALOT about it , and i read more about loans since the post , im sure i could get loans and grants through my entire schooling , but then again what about the cost of living ? and affording the basics while i attend school ? My sister is actually becoming a nurse so we have spoke about it " after i made this post " and she told me the only way to really become a doctor n my situation would be to move in with my parents "im married btw" or find a bunch of roommates.. She said to become a doctor and my stage in the game i would need a solid support team to help me through .... Im not even sure if im smart enough to get accepted into med school .... Like i said before , in the past 8 years of not being in school , i hve forgotten everything . I cant even do algebra n e more " i have tried " ... I mean i cant even spell simple words , or make correct sentences ... I mean im going to give it a shot , why not , why wonder for the rest of my life about it , plus im tired of blue collar work .... I would rather help people ... But i really do appreciate the replies .. Ok here is the real question lol , is 25 too old to start school to become a doctor ? I was mainly wanting to do nursing to get my foot in the door , but i guess you really cant do that ... |

| Posted over 4 years ago I'm 25 and in nursing school right now. I have actually found once you're past the freshman survey classes I tend to be one of the YOUNGEST in my classes. The other thing to remember is that after high school it doesn't matter how many years you've been alive, you are with a group of individuals all going after the same thing, so more than likely your interests and opinions will all be very closely related, so it's no problem making friends and study-buddies. Some of my best friends are older than me and I don't see THEM as old, why would someone younger than myself see me as old? Biggest thing to remember is not to treat those younger than you poorly, or like they are kids, and they won't treat you like a "grandpa". Seriously 25 is NOT old! We still recover, stretch, party like an 18yr old... when you 92 you can start thinking that you're old. Until then you're only as old as you want to be!

| Posted over 4 years ago First of all you are never too old to do what u love. Second you will probably have to take some remedial classes in math and stuff to get familar with some of the high school courses again. Just take it one step at a time and you will get there. Whatever you put your mind to you can do it. 25 please! you are still young. I'm 30 and i'm about to do the LPN but being a doctor is a lot of schooling and you will need a lot of patience. I say start slow first and do the LPN and the get your associates in nursing from there. It's very time consumming and a lot of money but if this is really what you want to do then i say go for it. You only live once so live it happy. |

| Posted over 4 years ago If you want to get your feet wet,so to speak, start with an LVN program like the one at .www.summitcollege.edu. They're located in Orange county CA. If you like it, you can always go on to an LPN or RN degree. Good luck! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Imold I personally know a physician, who started as an orderly, worked his way through becoming an ORT, then an RN then decided to go to med school and become a physician. He had done five tours in Vietnam prior to all of this, so he started his ORT somewhere around 27. To this day, he is one of the finest surgeons I have ever had the pleasure to work with. |

| Posted over 4 years ago OK so school IS hard. Not going to tell ya it's all going to be ok and you have nothing to worry about. But it is not the hardest thing in the world. If you have been out of school for a while then you will have to take some classes like A&P and maybe some math, Bio and all that fun stuff, but once you get going it's not that bad at all. The BEST advice I can give is if you feel like you have to take a break form school TAKE IT!!! If you don't after being out for so long you will burn out, and after a month or 2 you will remember why you wanted to go back in the first place. Good luck to ya =) |

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. What an appropriate statement from someone working in the plumbing industry. Get it........pipe dream........plumbing. Alright, go ahead and slap me. I'm more than twice your age and am just now taking the prereq's to nursing. No time like the present!!!! Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans ~ John Lennon Scott |

I'VE TAKEN MY PREREQUISITES AND I'M STILL NOT IN. MY COUSIN IS 29 AND HE WILL BE 30 WHEN HE FINISHES THE NURSING PROGRAM. | Posted over 4 years ago Sorry, but quit playing! 25 is not old. If u think ur old now what are u gonna do when ur really old at say 30! LOL. I'm 24 and a single mother of 2 beautiful children. Destini (6) and Desmond (18 months). My son was born at 23 weeks weighing 1lb 4 oz.. To date he's had 16 surgeries and he has some developmental delay problems. I have only been able to work off and on because of the care he has needed. I went to college when i finished high school and have changed my major a million times. I never finished a degree. I took classes in Accounting, medical assistant, business management, & Medical records. Now because of the experience i've had with my son i've decided to add nursing to the bunch. However, I'm starting from scratch. Only a few of my other classes will go towards my nursing degree. It's been 2 yrs since i was last in school so i'm starting slow with 1 class next semester. I'm gonna do LPN first then work my way up from there. Ultimately, I want to work in Public Health. I know it's gonna take some time and i will be "Old" just like you. But at least we will not just be "Old" but "Old Nurses" or Dr. if u want. Determination is key. I got this book about going back to college geared towards older students and there was a lady in there concerned about the same thing and she said a counselor told her "That time is gonna go by anyway so even though u may be 30 or 33 or whatever when u finish but at least u will be 30 with a degree." That inspired me so much. I decided i don't (can't) waste any more time. I Will Be 30 with a Nursing degree!!!! YaY!!! I'm so excited!!! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Yea, you're not old. Im 23 and Im going back to schoo. Thats what Im going to do, start with LPN and then bridge to an RN program. I took all the wrong steps. Today Im a surgical Tech and I can't find a job because I didnt put it to practice right after school and never got certified. Then I tried to get into a surgical first assistant program and couldnt afford it because I didnt have a job. So don't give up, keep trying and don't worry about your age. Its just a number. |

| Posted over 4 years ago 1. You are not too old. I went to school with a woman who started at 56. 2. If you really want to be a doctor, you should be thinking of starting pre-med. 3. I've often considered leaving nursing and becoming a plumber, because the money is better. So are the hours. 4. Please don't think of Nursing as a stepping stone to anything. It's a discipline of it's own. 5. As a plumber, I'm surprised that you'd have a problem with poop! Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that stood it's ground.

| Posted over 4 years ago I'm working with 'doc in training' who is in his mid 30's. He first did 4 years in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, before doing any college. I worked with another MD, who was in his 40's, who didn't start college until he was at least 30, and did non medical work all during his 20's. I worked with another doc, who went to school to be a paramedic, and worked as a paramedic for several years before going to college to finish his degree, and persue his MD. No it's not too late. |

... Did you mistype your age and perhaps mean 52 instead of 25? If not- then I have to laugh, because 25 is still so very young ;) More and more older adults (I don't mean 20-somethings LOL) are going back to school either for the first time or to change careers. it's common and no one is going to think twice about it. Live well, Laugh often, Love much,

| Posted over 4 years ago If you have health insurance get into therapy. 25 or 52? If you want to be a doctor get your BSN (you'll need a bachelor's anyway), take your pre-reqs for med school and study for the MCATS. You need chem up to organic 2, sometimes bio-chem, stats, at times calc... depends on the school, bio 1and 2 and if you can get up to bio-chem you' re covered in terms of bio and chem (getting there is half the battle). Oh yes, physics 1 and 2 which can require calc or not...again depends on the school. The Basic starting point is going to community college if you don't have self-esteem and taking the entrance exam there. Take whatever math they suggest and start from there. Learn how to make technology your friend cuz It's all based on math. You need it to balance equations in every type of science. It is a big part bio when you get beyond the basics. Also abstract thinking and logic. It sounds like a lot but if you love it go for it. I also suggest biomedical ethics as a class just for fun. And learn about the history of the disciplines you're considering. Medicine is deep. It's not just writing scripts and running around with a white coat on yelling at nurses (although they do it so well!) You can transition from RN to MD but you just might want to stay in nursing and get your NP. Sounds like your issues are poor self esteem and identity problems. This is not an insult. Good for you for asking and putting out there but you're all over the place. I don't think you know what you want and perhaps a therapist can help you with that. But who would you pick? A PHD, NP, MD, MSW or one of those self-proclaimed psychotherapists? Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm 34 and will always be in school. It's a journey, not a destination. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I went back to school at 30 and I worried about being the oldest in class and if I would be able to make it with 2 kids a house to care for and a husband but it was what I really wanted to do. I wasn't going to let any thing stop me. Around here you have to have a 20 on the ACT to get in the ADN program so I took the test just to see how hard it was and if I didn't make a 20 I would take classes to help me relearn the stuff I had forgot from school. I had been out of school over 10 yrs. I made a 22 first try. As for being the oldest in class I was in the highest age group. About 70 percent was between the ages of 25 to 35 and 20 percent was 18 to 24 and the rest was over 36 oldest being 68 and I was in a large class there was 180 of us. Anyway what have you decided to do? I know this is topic started a few months ago so I was just wondering. Marsha Nursing it's how I live my life..... |
