nursing judgement

Posted over 5 years ago Has anyone ever had their nursing "judgement" challenged? I'm under the impression that when you are hired, you are hired for your nursing experience( I have 27 yrs.) and your nursing judgement goes along with that. Especially, at LTC where you are left "hanging in the wind" most of the time and having to make decisions on your own. My nursing judgement was questioned at a LTC prior to an anticipated State visit. It was felt that I had not followed the MD order to the letter. No one was harmed in any way and I only had the patient's best interest at heart. I had worked there for 3 years. I was, shall we say "let go" prior to the state's visit. Later, there was an investigation and it was found that I had NOT acted with any negligience while using my nursing judgement. It was also found that given the circumstances, I had acted in the best interest of the patient and all complaints were dismissed. After being a nurse for 27 yrs., this situation caused me much self doubt. I didn't work as a nurse for many months afterward. Now I believe that, in the same set of circumsances, I would do the same thing again. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Or been wrongly terminated?? I'd like to know. |

| Posted over 5 years ago Charlita, I was not terminated but a ditzy manager had the nerve to question my judgment once and was about to write me up over an order. This was on a detox unit. The patient had standing orders for detox and prn orders. prn orders are there for nurses to use their judgment. This ditzy broad had now idea about detox or the medication. She was not even sure about the prn orders. She made the stupid remark "Well 2 to 4 mg, that makes the nurse responsible and having to make a choice." Duh! She did not write me up. Good thing. I am sure something like that would feel a person with doubt. Do not let someone have that kind of power. I am glad it all worked out for you. Also, glad to hear you would not do it any differently if you had the chance to do it over. That says you did the right thing. Still, it is a crappy thing to have to go through. I would not go back to LTC for any amount of money. I loved working with that population of patients but I hated the culture of the back biting in that environment. |
