Posted over 4 years ago At first, I wondered why I was invited to join a Psych nursing forum. I'm a CCU nurse...I've always run from psych nursing like a scalded dog. Then I thought about what I do every day. Probably 10-20% of my day is spent doing actual critical care procedures. The rest of my day is spent doing paperwork, basic nursing care, and psych nursing. I deal with the psychiatric needs of my patients, their families & friends, and the other caregivers that come in contact with my patient. And it is probably one of the best & most exhausting parts of my job. I guess my nursing school instructor was right...all nursing is psych nursing. Thanks for inviting me. |

| Posted over 4 years ago well, at last, a student who heard what the psych nursing instructor was saying. for those who work in the ER, at least 30% of your patients will be psych. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Thanks to cdnurse--I am actually now looking forward to psych rotation next semester. Especially now since I have had a patient with psych issues. Again, Ginny--thank you for all of your assistance. I really appreciate it.

| Posted over 4 years ago I am actually interviewing for my first position in psych nursing tomorrow. I would really like to get this position. Any suggestions for preparing for the interview. To have someone actually on the site that is a psych instructor is a big advantage. I would really appreciate any thoughts you can share with me. I have been in nursing since 1984 and have an AD. I have a lot of experience, OR, dialysis, geriatric, pshch-geriatric, but no psych. This position would be in an acute setting with a VA. Can any one offer suggestions?

| Posted over 4 years ago I sent you an email. Did not see this. Play on the psych exposure that you have. You have been using far more psych than you realize. Just remember from school all of the theraputic communication topics. Also speak to them about how important it is for the vets to have good psych care and see if you can pull up some news items about vets and MH care. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Replying to chymarra, its true psych nursing is involved with all nursing fields. I've been working in a state hospital for 22 years and when I did my med surge rotation it's no difference. I'm glad you're aware because I tell new students to keep in mind that whatever you learn during psych rotation keep the skills, you will need them always, not just for patients but family and friends of the patients!! |

| Posted over 2 years ago Once I received my license and became a registered nurse, my first hospital position was in psych. I enjoyed it very much. I am now a float nurse. |
