Nope... actually  never did...I have made it a point to NOT attend any graduation ... ever....and I have not done so since high school.

You do not need to show up to those dog and pony shows to get your diplomas. LPN, ADN,BSN... even CRNA.. i just had them mail the diplomas to me and went out for a nice dinner.

I am one of those rare individuals that is a conservative that is against the death penalty.  I feel that it is legal sanctioned murder. So there is no way I would ever participate in it. Is it unethical or violate any legally inforcable oaths? Probably not, but my personal ethics will not allow me to do it.

I wish more graduates would do that.  I have to attend commencement every Spring, and it is tedious.  I always show up with a hand held portable fan, a drink, my iPod, and a book to get me through the interminable speeches.  The last couple of speakers have wanted to talk about themselves for an hour rather than charge the graduates.  Last year, a family member started blowing an air horn after this guy droned on and on about his own successful life--the guy didn't miss a beat and kept going for another 20 minutes.  Gah.

For me, pinning is much more special.  I enjoy pinning, and congradulating my students.  The class is big and gets bigger every year (60 some last year), but we keep it to an hour, and tell the speakers, "Keep it short, and keep it focused on the graduates."

I didn't go to commencement for my LPN certificate.  Pinning was much more personal after the tedium of high school graduation.  I also skipped my ADN, and MSN graduations.  Glad I did.  Getting my Master's hood for my MA was special, because I was close to the faculty, otherwise the ceremony was a chore.  I skipped it for my MSN--I never met my instructors face to face (online program) and didn't know any of my classmates, and didn't want to fly to Arizona by myself.

Whether or not you have a physician's order, it is a violation of the Nightingale Pledge and unethical.  Nurses have no place in executions.  I wouldn't even start the IV.

The Nighengale Pledge has no force of law... And, I am pretty sure I never took it as i never attended.. pinnings, graduation ceremonies etc etc.

You should be far more afraid of the Nurse Practice Act than the Nightengale Pledge.. which, in reality, is meaningless. It is not a legal oath.

You probably took it when you were pinned.  The Nightingale Pledge is a traditional part of pinning ceremonies.

You are right in that it does not have the force of law.  Neither does the Hippocratic Oath.  But both play a role in the definition of ethics for our profession.

I'd be curious to know if any BON has weighed in on the issue.

Never went to a pinning.

at no cost that i would want a job like this and i really don't believe in death penaIty. there are some people who can care less as long as they are getting paid. i am no t God. I worked at a juvenile detention center and one child came in on a rape charge. well i really wanted to slap this child for allowing such thought to enter into his mind. his complaints was that he are having headaches and he wants to go home. well, well, well. i hav to let him see that he really needs to put himself in the shoes of the victim. well it has been about 3 weeks and the youth seems to be adjusting well. no more complaints of headaches. i will continue to keep each and every one in my prayers.

tough job, someone's gotta do it... I'm probably not the best candidate & would have moral/ethical disturbances if I was assigned.
