I am a 39 yr old male and retiring from the NYPD in 2 years and i want to start a second career in Nursing. I dont know where to start and what school i should attend. Im looking for a 2 year program and some scholarships to help fund my education. I wonder how difficult nursing school is and will i be effective as a 41 yr old rookie nurse? can anyone give me some insight!

Absolutely ,you need to do it. I am 47 and have been a nurse for almost 20 years, but there are many men I work with that are getting their degree now, and are your age, do it, do it. You will make a great ER, trauma nurse with your police background. Do not ever under estimate the skills you have already learned that can be transfered into your next career. I do not know about money for school, but any community college that is accredited will do!!!!!!!!!!! Best of luck and if I can answer any more questions let me know.

I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS.

Thanks for the encouragement, my friend was a cop and a nurse for 20 years. I thought that was inspiring. He says im patient and my personality is perfect for the job. I just havent been to school in over 20 years and im alittle intimidated. I studied to be a Sergeant and Lieutenant and i went to college, 96 credits, but i took easy courses just to get promoted. I am getting excited though about starting a new challenging career.

Wow............JUDLEERN is totally right.  You'd be fabulous !   Check into the scholarships and stuff and I'm sure you'll find a way.  I bet along the way you have made alot of nurse friends who would love to see you do this..    Were you there for 9/11?  Geez..................all of our law enforcement are a blessing to this country, and whether you were or  not, thanks for your sacrifices along the way.   Im sure those folks in New York would be fortunate if you did this.  Good Luck!

We only have one heart, take care of it!

I have been on the job for 18 years and after 911 there was so much support from the entire country and abroad. Thanks for your support.

Congrats to you! I was over 40 when I went through the LPN School. No doubt in my mind you will be fantastic. Check all the resources there - city, county, etc. You might be able to get a grant. I was network analyst before I was a nurse. NY State was glad to have another nurse! I took a few tests and got the grant to pay for the entire program.

My sister went through both Police Academy and Nursing School, and said that Police Academy was tougher. So come on in, the water is great!

Good luck to you

Walter

Can you tell me which NY State program issued the Grant. I really need the financial assistance at this time. Dont we all!

Absolutely you are not too old!  I have 3 semesters left and will be 52 when I graduate - I love school and am more focused and get better grades than most of my fellow students....especially the ones right out of high school.  You just keep believing in yourself and it will flow for you!  Nikki
