I started college at 18, but it took 10 years to get my first Bachelor's degree. That was in education. I taught for 9 years. I became an EMT to decide if I really wanted to be in the medical field. I was 46 in July. I graduated with my LPN in November of 06. I am slooooowwwwwlllllllyyyyy working on my RN. I too hope to go forward and get my MSN. I was just given the administrator position in my current job which is in geriatrics. I love it, but....I think I want to try forensic nursing. I would also like to be an ER nurse.
Ladies and gentlemen, it doesn't matter what age you are, you just always need to keep moving forward. It can be a challenge. I have always worked fulltime and been raising children, my youngest (14) with health problems. You can all do it. Half the fun is the challenge.

I feel so much better know there are others like me who are starting out at a nontraditional age.
I started nursing school at 18, but at the time it just wasn't for me- I guess I just wasn't ready for it yet. I dropped out and took other college classes, but never graduated.
At 26, I went to school and became an LVN. Now, at 36, I am working toward my RN. One of these days I will make it.
Although I haven't quite decided my career goal,it will either be in forensic nursing or holistic nursing.

I was 30 years old when I started my nursing classes. I wish that I had started sooner but life's lessons had to be learned first!

It seemes that all the Latebloomers or Returned back to Nursing people. All say the same thing, I wish I would of started this early, or I wish I would of continued on in nursing. The reality of the situation, you are never to old or young to help people. That's why the latebloomer list is so long, because we love to help people their is not a job out there besides being a preschool teacher that is so rewarding to ourselves.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I graduated from high shcool one year early, unexpectedly, so I wasn't ready to go to college at 18. I waited and worked 2 years before I went, and felt very old to be starting at 20. I went to college to learn to be a writer, because that's what I'm supposed to be in life, but I ended up studying counseling and rehabilitation. 18 years later, I went back to school to study nursing. Because it took me that long to go back to school, I figured I might never go back again, so I stayed the extra year for the BSN while I was there. I just started a graduate program, right after I decided I was too old because I don't want to pay off educational debt in retirement! I found a plan I think I can afford without debt. We'll see. Incidentally, when I was in my original freshman orientation, at the age of 20, there was an 81 year old woman starting college! I got the message that there is no deadline here. We get to it when we get to it. My guess is that she was not there for career purposes! Did you guys here about the 95 year old woman who graduated college recently?

Well, I'm just now getting ready to start my prereqs in Jan. 08, and I am going for the RN. I will be turning 51 this Dec., plus I will be going full time, so I'll should be about 53-54 (if all goes well) when I graduate. But, this is something I have wanted since I was 20 years old. And so I figure, "better late than never." I should be able to work at least 10 more years, if not alittle more, so that's fine with me.

When I was in highschool, they had a future teachers club there. I originally joined the club to be a teacher, because my aunt and cousin worked at a elementary school, as a Instructional Aid. My aunt use to take me to work with her, and I use to help her and the teacher, help prepare class assignments. Life got in the way with that. It doesn't matter if we have these resources in school at a early age, what matter's is how we use those experience and knowlege throughout our lives. I use that experience, by being a stay home mom , and teaching my children at home. Eventually, I made a contribution to the school's because my children were reading before they started Kindergarden.

I graduated from nursing school (RN) at 20, went back to college at age 59, graduated at age 62 with a B.S. and a perfect 4 point. At age 71 (2006) I retired from Infection Control in a large hospital. I wanted to be a nurse from the time I could remember. Mom was a nurse, Dad's sister was a nurse, his brother had 8 children and 6 are girls and all nurses. I am a nurse, my daughter is a nurse and my grandaughter is in school studying to be one now. I guess you could say I was "pre-disposed" to nursing. I practiced my craft for 50 years and am contemplating going back to work again for I am widowed and I loved nursing. I miss it, kids are all grown and gone and and so why not? Shirley

I have been in and out of college since I was 23 taking whatever floated my boat at the time. I went back to school seriously at 26 and took up Court Reporting. I stayed there for two years, but I desperately needed a job because I saw my three kids going without and it was hard being a single parent living on $149 a month. I was hired at the hospital in which I am currently employed and I had to give up the court reporting because it needed my full attention. At least a year in a half ago, I recieved a scholarship from the department I work in to get my ADN. I was so excited and just kicked off. I commend all the late bloomers for returning to school especially all of us single parents. We show so much to our kids about getting that education and self-fulfillment. I am glad that these comments were posted because I feel so much better being 34 and getting my ADN because I was feeling a little drawn back until I read this. Thank you all and keep your dreams alive!

I was a car mechanic in high school, then joined the USAF and became an aircraft mechanic, then left the AF after the initial 4-year enlistment and was an auto parts manager for a year and then went to school for a BSN (24.5 years old). At this point I've been a nurse for 28 years.

I am starting next month in an ADN program at the age of 24. I originally started college at 18 working toward a BA majoring in education, then switched to psychology and then to family studies. After 3 years and my mother being very ill I dropped out. I was engaged so I went ahead and got married, soon after had a baby (who is now 8 mo.). I am much more serious about school than I ever was before and I am very excited to know that I will be able to call myself a nurse one day.

I was 25 when I graduated with my AAS degree in Nursing, and now at the age of 43 I have almost completed my BS degree ( an accelerated program 58 credits in 15 months). I plan to continue with my Masters degree as a NP, I just haven't decided on which program I will attend. More power to anyone that is entering this profession

I went for one semester right after high school. I hated it and failed out. I worked as a rest. manager for 7 years and then went back for my BSN at 25 and graduated in 3 years with a 3.95. I guess I just wasn't ready at 18 and had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up.

Got ya all beat!! got my RN at age 20, my BS (not BSN) at age 25 and was 54 when I got my MSN. Returned to school at 51 and now, at almost 55 I am in the doctoral mode!! I ALWAYS wanted to be a nurse. When a guidance counselor told me I needed 4 years of school, I briefly thought about being a math teacher, but nursing won out. I trained at the hospital where my granddad did his residency and where I was born. My 1st start in life and my new start in life. I have been a nurse for 34 years and have not regretted one single minute,. I love nursing. My daughter is a nurse, both of us are labor nurses, I have also done stints in geriatrics, management and now am into education. Thank god for nursing's variety!!!

How interesting. I am 35 and just starting nursing school. I am currently in an LPN program, but plan to go right back and get my RN BSN. I started in the LPN program due to cost and scheduling. I work 3 jobs and have 2 children and lots of animals so scheduling unfortunately is an issue, but I am determined and know in my heart that this is exactly what I want to do with the rest of my life.

I was brought up to believe that women didn't have careers, they got married and had babies and that's what I did. After 5 children and a divorce I knew I had to do something to survive on my own so at the age of 46 I began taking classes at the local University. I struggled with Math but I was able to pull thru it and now have my LVN license. Eventually I will go back and do the upward mobility program for my associate degree. Gotta do something to pay of all these student loans........YIKES!!
