This is for nanacarolynn. What do you plan to speciialize in when you get your MSN. Do any one know if you need a BSN or MSN to specialize as a Fire Specialist Safety Nurse. Have you ever heard of one before, or do you know what is the right speciality name?

I haven't heard of that specialty. I know that I want to do some teaching and consulting when I am finished with this degree. Nanacarolynn

Hey everyone!! Thanks for giving me hope. I am 51 and have been a medical assistant for almost 10 years now. I work in an outpatient wound care center and I tell all my patients, Yea, half the time I can't tell you my own name, but darn it, I'm going back to school!! My goal is to become an RN before it's time to retire. Any advice and all prayers gladly accepted. I have tremendous respect for all nurses and caregivers, I really believe all of you are gifts!!!!

My wife and I just got accepted into a local ADN program at the ripe old age of 41 and 40 respectivly. We are going to be going to class together. It is going to be great to have my own 24/7 study and stick partner. We are both very excited. My adviser had told me that there was know way that I was going to get in this (spring) semester. I got my acceptance letter Wed.. I went to talk to her Fri. to see what all that I needed to do prior to school starting and she informed me that my wife had almost enough points to get in. About an hour later my wife called me with the good news. They had called her and told her that due to someone dropping out of the program she had been chosen to start in the spring. So it is going to be a two for one deal.

I was also a very rebellious teen. I decided to have a family first. I first started college at 26 after i had my fourth child. well as i remember i started two weeks after i had him. I am now in my sixth year with a double major. Major one is my BSN and second is health and human studies.
I too like gailp have a passion for labor and delivery and also will work where all four of my children were born on the same exact unit. Can't wait.... I also always knew that i wanted to be a nurse, however the thought once crossed my mind to be a lawyer but realized that i could use my big mouth for better things such as advocating for someone who could really use a person who is not afraid to step in for them......

I started college at the age of 22 years old. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Accounting and Management Studies in 2003. I worked as a volunteer for one year, then started a Masters degree in Finance, from which I graduated last year at the age of 30. I have always wanted to get into healthcare, but never really gave nursing a thought until now. So now I am back in school (community college) completing my prereqs for the ADN. I have already been accepted into a nursing program, partly because of my outstanding undergraduate and graduate work. I just believe that this is where I should be. I don't have a lot of support though.

ccburkejm - do not despair. Congrats on earning your undergrad and grad degrees, by the way. You stated that you don't have much support... Just keep on forging ahead with your plans; you know that it is (nursing) what you want to do and not what others want for you. I have only shared my career change plans with a select few people just because I may not get a whole lot of support just as you said. I completed my B.S. Degree (non-nursing) at the beginning of this year which was not cheap; this is probably why I do not receive the support that I think I should. Investing more time and money into education may not seem appealing or productive to some. At best, my immediate family supports my desire to become a 2nd career nurse but I am going the economical way - Community College. Good luck to you. This is a great site to stay connected with folks affiliated with the nursing field or are interested in it.

I was 39 when I first started working on my pre-reqs in 2000. I worked full-time and went to school part-time. I was 42 when I started into the nursing program in 2003. Once I started into the nursing program I started working part-time and going to school full-time. After six months I had to quit working b/c it was too much to try and keep up with my studies and take care of my husband and 2 children. My kids were 9 and 16 but were still depending on my to help take care of them. I graduated in May 2005 at the ripe age of 44. I just took me longer than others to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Started at 18, at Kent State University, majored in English on a full scholarship, graduated at 20. I was there during the riots, not a fun time. I did my student teaching and absolutely hated it. I'm petite, all the kids were taller than I and most at them looked older. I was constantly stopped in the halls being asked for a pass or grilled by someone as to why I was not in class. I did various jobs for two years decided to go into nursing, got in right away and did my prereq's in my first year, just before the lottery's started, graduated in 1974 at 24 and have been in nursing ever since. 34 years this June.

I am going to be 38 in a month, I started my pre-req's about 3.5 years ago. I am on my last 2 and I can apply to nursing school in September, I feel like this is going on forever, but I guess with 3 kids + 1 stepson and a husband I have only taken classes in spring and fall semesters. It has been very hard and there are many times I have questioned did I want to keep going, but this is always something I wanted to do and now I have the support group to do it.

I went to school for my LVN in 1995-96. I was 35 when classes started and 36 when finished. I was a single mom with two young children and going through a very difficult divorce. Now at nearly 48 years old I have just finished a refresher course to get my license back after almost 5 years of being inactive. Believe me if I did it through all of what I had to go through then anyone with a real desire to be a nurse can do it

Wow, reading through all of this stuff, it blows my mind. I am 33 and want to start school but the whole 3 kids and a step daughter graduating from hs next year and college is very hard for me to swollow. i want to become a lpn but i have been out to school for so many years and i couldn't stand school. I work a full time job and i have to work at least 34hrs aweek. yes i do have a husband but lets face it when they are done from work they are done. Right now I am able to be home for my kids when they get home from school or shortly after them and do my mothering duties. i love it but its alot of work. where would i go to school, where would i find studing time. this is so annoyingly scary for me. And i am a real go get her person, when i want something i get it, nothing stops me, but taking away family time from my kids and family, i don't know if i can do it.

I went to college at age 17 straight out of high school. I obtained my BS in 1999. I worked a while. Then returned to school in 2004 to obtain my master's degree. I worked for one year in Rehabilitation Counseling. Decided to return to school again to finish what I orignally started in the first place Nursing.

I went to college at 18, but my whole plan to become a CBS news anchor didn't pan out! Figure that? I love medicine, so I decided to go back in 2002 and get my CNA and EMT license. Planned on Paramedic school, but I really didn't enjoy being an EMT, so here I am in 2008, at age 38, heading back for my RN. Hey, I love school, learning and I might even make a little money one of these days. I just have to quit spending money on all these certificates and licenses!
It gets costly to keep taking classes but never work!

Well, May as well stick my info in here, since I am lurking about and reading all these posts...I sure am glad I am here, because, I am 40, just starting my CNA classes April 22, 2008 finishing in June 3, 2008, and April 22, 2008 signing up for refreshers math, english and a College skills class, Plus the pre-req for Psychology and that starts on Sept. 2, 2008. Lemme tell ya, I am Scared outta my wits. Seems like I have wanted this forever and all of a sudden its wham bam thank you ma'am. Going quite fast this school stuff is. I have 4 kids, 2 granddaughters and another grandbaby on the way, with a fiance' and just 2 years ago relocated from Michigan to New Jersey starting my entire life from the bottom. Cared for my sister, mother, aunt, father, and grandmother for the last 13 years and just now am able to figure out what I wanna be when i grow up. Hmm, maybe I should say I am 18 trapped in a 40 year old body? *grins*....I am going to just take this one day at a time and see where it leads me, but I sure hope the outcome is positive.

I went to college when I was 22. I took up Business Administration but because I was the bread winner of the family I had to stop school after some 3 semesters to work full time. Now 49, married but no kids I want to be a nurse. I am taking classes to become a CMA-Certified Medication Aide and then later...hope to take BSN.

Finished 20 years in the Air Force and have a BS and MS. Not happy working the last 7 years as a Department of Defense contractor....it was just a "pay check." Start a 14 month accelerated BSN program May 12 and will be almost 50 when I graduate. I am so excited.

I actually started and quit several times, but I was 22 when I first tried. I never accomplished anything at that time. I am now in a better situation now, as well as happier more motivated and a whole lot more stable! I am ready for anything now!
