Posted almost 5 years ago I went to college at Kent State University right out of high school in 1988. I completed a BA degree in Psychology and Sociolgy. From there, I worked as a Case Manager for a mental health agency in Akron Ohio. I worked there from 1998 to 2007. I had my second son in 2001. At this time, I had been wanting to go back to school to become a nurse for a long time. As the agency that I worked for lost funding, our pay and benefits started to become less and less. So I started nursing school in Jan of 2002. I continued to work full time and take care of my family, with the help of my husband, while I went to school. I graduated in May 07 at the age of 36.

Posted almost 5 years ago I started community college part time at 28 (2002) as a single parent of 1and received my AS in 2007. While completing my pre-reqs is when I realized nursing was what I wanted to pursue. However, after my 3rd year, the state had my school to reclass all of their pre-nursing students into a degree program. This took placed because they had many students waiting to get into the program with 50+ credits. It was either Liberal Arts of General Science. I had completed most of my science requirement proir to getting into the progarm so, I took the general sceince route and received my AS. It all worked out because I never got into that schools Nursing Program, but received a degree from them for all of my hard work. Now, at 34, I just started at another college for my ADN and because I have fulfilled all of my core classes that is required, I just have my nursing classes to complete. However, I think I'm going to go the diaploma option because in order to get a ADN from the college, I will have to take some college classes and I dont really want to repeat any classes. My instructor stated whether it's a diaploma, ADN or BSN, we all sit for the same exam- NCLEX-RN. Anyhow, my plan is to get my RN in 2010 and continue on to receive my BSN and with GODS help and guidance my MSN. RN2010

Posted almost 5 years ago My youngest son graduated from high school on June 23, 2007 and I started a nursing program three days later, June 26, 2008. I graduate next month and just celebrated my 48th birthday. It seems more difficult to remember things now compared to when I was in my 20's but somehow I'm making it through and keeping an 86% average my last term. I know I have a lot of life experience to add to my "book learning" and I'm sure it will come in handy when I'm a nurse. I love the choice I made!

Posted almost 5 years ago I graduated from school in 1977, I had 2 goals when I started back school, to graduate with a degree before the age of 50, and go into nursing. I figured that in order to get my degree before the age of 50, I had to started taking classes, and I started going to night school at the local city college in 2002. I recieved my AS in Business Management May 2008 at to age of 49. One goal down. Nursing to go. I started in June to become LVN at the local adult school. I will graduate in Auguest 28, 2009. I will be 50 1/2 when I graduate.. close enough.. If I can to this, I know you can also do this. It takes determination and a great support system....I could not have made it with out my husband. Good luck...

Posted almost 5 years ago I went back to school when I was 23 and had 3 small children...ages 5, 2, and 4 months. I entered LPN school full time. About 4 months into classes my baby became sick with Kawasaki's disease plus spinal meningitis and almost died from it. I put school on hold for the time she was in the hospital, but the instructors wouldn't allow me to just sit and worry myself sick, so they brought me in my assignments, picked up my completed assignments and even brought me my tests to take. They were all angels! They counted my daughters hospital time as my clinical, and when she was all better I went back to class and did a presentation on her sickness. I'll never forget my instructors for what they did for my daughter and me.

Posted almost 5 years ago I just started my RN program 3 weeks ago and I am 32, to be 33 in October... I guess that makes me a late bloomer, but I feel I am now better equipped to handle nursing school than I was 10 years ago. Angela

Posted over 4 years ago I just turned 28.... I graduated from college in 2003, with a degree in Pre-Medicine/Psychology/Biology. I was a graduate of a BA/MD program, specializing in rural health. I decided, at the last minute in my senior year, that I was better suited to become a doctor on TV than I was to become a 'real' doctor. hehe... So, I've been working in social work for the past five years-- including 3 years as an investigator for Child Protective Services. Right now, I'm rather disillusioned with social work-- and am trying to decide if I want to go for my RN... or if I want to do the whole rigamarole with the GRE and apply to PA school. I still haven't lost my love for rural health issues, and would like to live/work in a rural area... maybe do some travel nursing...

Posted over 4 years ago I started college in my early 20's, but life happened (kids, etc), and withdrew and returned several times until I finally graduated from nursing school with my ADN in May 2008 at 37! I am going now for my BSN and will have it in May 2009, finally! I guess we're never too old to follow our dreams! By the way, I left a job at the post office (13 years there) to follow my dream of becoming an RN! I finally did it, but I am finding it tough to get in the swing of things of starting my first nursing job. Any tips?

Posted over 4 years ago Hi everyone! I ferociously jumped back into college for my pre-req's this (Fall 08) semester at the tender age of 40! Each exam I study for and course I look into keeps my momentum going, and I am really enjoying learning all about the different and vast areas of nursing. I plan to have my RN-ASN in the next 3 years if all goes as scheduled.. I have been a stay at home mom for many years now, and I dreaded the thought of returning to my former career in retail management when my work here at home was "finished" My son is now grown and on his own, and I am getting to know sooo many interesting and intelligent people who really are becoming mentors to me. Inspiration is great! Good luck to everyone in their life-long goals and dreams!!

Posted over 4 years ago I started college at age 40 started with pre- reqs then entered the program with 4 children and a husband, full time job and wondering what the heck I thought I was doing... I thought at this point in my life (and I thought this many times) I am too old to do this! I should be at home taking care of my family and not being so selfish. Most of my classmates were young enough to be my own kids. I took two quarters off and finally I graduated at the age of 44 1/2 (LOL) with my ADN. But looking back and knowing what I know now, IT WAS WORTH IT!!!! Take time to smell the flowers, Laugh when you want to cry, Hold on tight and don't say good by, and always Remember the good and don't harp on the bad...

Posted over 4 years ago You can go back to school at any time and benefit from it. I went to Penn State when I was 17 and got a BA degree (not in nursing) when I was 21. Went to the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in NYC and got a BSN when I was 34. When I was 41 I enrolled for an MSN degree at the U of Pittsburgh and got it 3 yrs later at age 44 (Psych CNS). I took 5 more graduate courses (one per semester for 5 semesters) at the U. of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio to update my education in the mid-1990's. None of the work was that difficult but there sure was a LOT of it. If you didn't keep up with it you were SUNK! I worked full time thru all of my education except for my first degree (my mom paid, bless her! Remember the old saying: "When there's a will there's a way!" Good luck to anyone who wants to go back to school at any age!

Posted over 4 years ago I went to Ohio State right out of high school...I didn't want to go, I only went because my dad didn't give me a choice! (He didn't have a college education, but he wanted his children to get one.) AND he made the mistake of telling me to "have a good time"...I think he wanted me to have the "whole" experience of college! I don't think he thought I'd "enjoy" myself so much!!! lol! But I figured that if I had to be there, I might as well make the most of it and have a good time! Anyway, I did make it through, but I definitely could have applied myself more and gotten better grades. After I graduated, I taught elementary school for a few years, and then, once I had my first baby, I became a stay-at-home mom for several years (thankfully I had a husband who was willing to support me and our children)...then, last year, with 2 children in their early 20's and I was 50 years old, I decided to go back to school to become a nurse...this time I was dedicated to my education, and I applied myself. And yes, my grades showed my dedication! There really is something to the "older adult learner"! BTW, when my children started college, I told them both that they were not going to college to "have a good time"! They were going to get an education!!!

Posted over 4 years ago i entered college at age of sixteen...i took BSEE(electrical engineering), hoping that my good grade in math will lead me to become an engineer, but i was wrong after a year of doing almost all of engineering stuff and i cant feel myself exploring the world of electricity anymore so i shifted to nursing at age of 17, i got my BSN diploma at age of 20 and my RN in the country i graduated at age of 23. Im happily married and just turned 24, 2 wks ago. Im hoping that 2009 will be a great year for me to start and enter the world of great service to humankind.

| Posted over 4 years ago I was 17 when I started my BS degree. 22 when I finished worked jbs I didn't like for a couple of years. Then stayed at home for 2 years got fed up with boredom and started taking nursing prereqs. At 29 started the accelerated BSN program. I learned a lot about myself on this long journey to my career happiness! AC There are no limitations in what you can do except the limitations of your own mind.

Posted over 4 years ago I had my first baby very early and only went part time in college for a couple years right after high school. After realizing my life was always going to be hitting the same wall over and over again I decided to go back for nursing. It was the best thing I could have done for myself and my three kids. Although it has been hard. I was 28 when I started and will be graduating in May 09 with my ADN-RN at the age of 31!! By the way, all your stories are encouraging!!! Thanks to all for sharing and Merry Christmas!

Some of Navy courses are college credits so I could say started at 18 but didnt start accoplishing nursing credits until 20. I dont' have any children and I cant imagine what it takes for mothers and fathers to go to school! Go Navy, Smooth Sailing! |

Posted over 4 years ago The first time I was nineteen, not married, no children and got a degree in interior design. Did not use it. This time around I am 39, going to be 40 in March, and going to my ADN. I am married, have been for 17 years, and have a 14 year old daughter. I will probably be about 42 when I get my BSN depending upon whether or not I can work and go to school at the same time.
