Posted over 4 years ago I was attending a tech college in an LPN program, I recieved B'snon all my finals except one I recieved a C, I had a conflict with a teacher that was really hateful to anyone that asked a question and then everything was smoothed over and applogies were made, then today I took a final and received a 77 on it, and was kicked out of the program, they told me I would have had to have an 80 to stay in the program. I am over half way through the program, all I have left is med surg, and maternal nursing and to finish up fundementals of nursing course and my clinicals, I have good grades in all my other finals and missed this one by 3 points under what they said I have to have. My question is : is there a way to challange this? and if so who would I contact? Thanks in advance for any help you can give on this. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you - Always remember what goes around, comes around so be careful how you treat people, it will come back to you be it good or bad |

| Posted over 4 years ago That was really close. Can't you repeat the subject? Do you have a guidance counselor to talk about your issues about your grade or problem? That is what I would do or just talk with the teacher or someone in office. I'm not familiar with education here in the States though. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I know that when i was in nursing school, we couldn't challenge the grades we made. If you had to have an 80 than that was what you had to have. Regardless of how far you were in the program. I hope that you don't give up. I would encourage you to reapply and continue. It's worth it.

That's good to know about your education here. Can't you just repeat the subject though? I wish you well Joyce! If you are really determined, then reapply and pursue your goal. Good luck! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Joyce, what city and state are you in. I start my program on the 1st of next month and I have been so worried about this issus because my cousin was just two months aways from completing her 15 month LVN program and this is the same thing that happen to her. She scored a 78 and needed 80 to pass. she is trying to see what it is that she can do to fight it and if she wins I can tell you everything that she did. But I do believe it is going to very from state to state |

| Posted over 4 years ago Read your syllabus and guidelines for the program. Most will say you have to maintain an OVERALL 80 percent to continue on, not 80 percent on every test. The program I am in, you maintain overall 80 for the quarter and then you move on. I would suggest you go to the dean of the program and challenge after confirming the percent is average or per test. You have a right to request an explanation. If then you still are out of the program, you can still check out other programs and some will let you in at certain points in the year or the program you are in may let you back in the next year when the class is offered again. I wish you the best of luck! |

| Posted over 4 years ago I was going to say the same thing, Go to the dean of the nursing program. Make sure you check your test and that you really only got a 77. I had a friend who they said didn't pass, but after going over her test the professor made mistakes and she did pass. Repeat the class, can't you do that. No big deal if you can, just do it... Do not give up...Best of luck I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I know all of you may disagree or may never read my comments again or even hold a grudge but I will take that chance for Joyce so she can do what she wants the most in her life and that is to be a nurse! She wants that more than anything and I hope to help her in a different direction.I may be big time wrong and I hope I am but If you want my HONEST opinion they would of curved the test. Do you get along with the teachers? Joyce that conflict with the teacher hurt you ALOT I believe. I know they can be real big time B---hes yet we must show restraint and avoid any conflict with them because they judge you also on this and your other characteristics. These characteristics are going to show and reflect what kind of nurse you will become in the real world. If you had a conflict with one of them then well what about a mean confrontational patient. They watch your behaviors!! I would advise you to have a meeting with the teachers. Admit you were wrong even if you were 100% right. Apologize with sincereity. Do what it takes. Whatever.! How do I dare even tell you this? Well during one final I made the bed wrong. I knew I failed. I waited until lunch and went home. I got a call an hour later from them to come back and complete the written test. I passed with 70 something. They all came out of their lions den and congradulated me. They knew I had the meanest toughest instructor on my back big time in the school as well as clinical. I never lost my cool with her and I can be really stubborn at times. One day she sent me home at 7:02am when I arrived to sign in for clinical. My eyes and facial expression were in shock. I said "you really want me to leave". She said yes and do it "now." I calmly walked down the hall. Something inside me just told me to do it .`I also had actually flunked math. They let me go only because I would have to take a course in the hospital I would work at. They knew I had what it took to be a nurse.GOOD LUCK !!! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Hi Joyce, I'd be interested on what exam it was and if it was a test like math where there is only one right answer or was it something like an essay, where the instructor can pretty much crucify you if she wants to. If it's a math test could you re-take it? If it was an essay, could you do an extra credit assignment? You are the customer there! Ask nicely for a full explanation from the dean, it sounds like going through the instructor won't get you far, and ask the dean what you can do. When you get an appointment with the her above all don't slam the instructor, take responsibility, and ask what you can do to be a better student. Practice in the mirror, until you can do it confidently and without emotion. You must advocate for yourself. You WILL be advocating for patients one day. As lawyerRN stated on a different forum, don't quit the program, make them kick you out, then you should have some appeal rights. Try looking at the "I got kicked out of school" discussion. I'll see if I can find it and post it here. Good Luck Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that stood it's ground.

That's really good that you were able to manage you're mean clinical instructor. I agree with some of your points. It would depend on how you approach the instructor. If you're gonna approach in a mean, insulting way (by questioning his grade for you), you will definitely have a bad response. But if you have a good approach, I think they would lighten up. It would depend on the person though. If you're really for nursing, you'll really become a nurse someday. Don't give up until you'll definitely know that the program is not for you. |
