Posted over 4 years ago I have been reading over some of the sites, and somethings never change. I know this will probably not be very popular, since the drama will be missing, but what is everyone doing to help our Nation, their community etc.. to get through these hard times. I am not one to buy into radical fears, I am one to get out and make things happen. Our country is in bad shape, but does that mean we have to sit around and moan, complain and attempt to induce terror??? Or posts radical thoughts and ideas? How about we talk about how we can do something positive given our situation. Obama is President and that is not going to change, but our attitudes and behaviors can, and we can come together and offer support to our country!!! What are some ways you are helping your community during these hard times? I have personally bought some jewelry, that I did not want nor like, because a young single mom was trying to make some money to buy her son diapers. I know this isn't monumental, but simple things like this can change someone else's situation and bring a little joy to their life, even if for a day. Okay, I doubt there will be any slamming each other on this thread, but hey I have been know to be wrong...LOL I look forward to some positive interaction for a change!!! | Posted over 4 years ago Hey, This is great! Even Obama says that the sweeping changes will not be all his doing but rather everyone needs to be involved in making the change. He says it a lot better.....it's on his web site. Welllll, as for me, I'm just a helper by nature. So, when my stepfather who has been deserted by his wife (my mom) is now having a hard time making ends meet also because the steel mill he works for is cutting hours, I help by buying food or anything else he and my siblings need. My uncle works for the same company, and he is having a harder time with getting hours because he is not as marketable as my step-father so I've been trying to encourage him to consider a home equity line of credit to have available in the event he is laid off for an extending period and needs to make his mortgage to avoid foreclosure. I just got word today that he will be laid off for at least the next month. Now I'm trying to encourage him to take this opportunity to take some courses to gain certification in other specialties so he may be more marketable in the future. I'm kind of tied down at the moment with helping the family including my grandfather who just lost his wife so I haven't had an opportunity to volunteer like I want to. However, I have spent time helping at homeless shelters in the past. I think that is going to be an area where we will see an increased need if people continue to lose jobs and new jobs are not created. ~ Melissa |

| Posted over 4 years ago i VOLUNTEERED DOWN AT HURRICANE KATRINA YEARS AGO, AND I CAN TELL YOU I GOT WAAAYYYY MORE OUT OF IT THAN I GAVE. IT MAKES YOU FEEL SO GOOD TO HELP THOSE IN NEED. GOOD JOB MG, KEEP ON HELPING, BECAUSE YOU ARE RIGHT, OUR PRESIDENT CAN'T DO IT ALONE, AND WE HAVE TO REMIND PEOPLE THAT HE DID NOT CAUSE THIS SITUATION EITHER. I AM GOING TO LOOK INTO HELPING AT HOMELESS SHELTERS AS WELL. KEEP THE IDEAS COMING... COME ON GIRLS I KNOW YOU ARE OUT THERE. NO DRAMA, JUST SUGGESTIONS OF HOPE HERE. Thanks, this is great info. I will check it out for sure. I surely need to clean out my closets and that is something I am going to do this weekend. I do not have to go back to work until Wed, so that gives me plenty of times. Hope you are alright!! That is since you said you are not working. I took time off a couple of times over the last 20 years and about went nutts after a few weeks... I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. | Posted over 4 years ago Your local Food Bank always needs a hand. Don't just donate the cheapest cans of food you can find, give things you like to eat. It is a great way to spend a Saturday morning, going grocery shopping then taking it to the Food Pantry. It doesn't cost much either, and every little bit helps. Sometimes I do get things that I don't eat anymore, but would like to. PopTarts, Beef Stew, cans of tuna, canned ham, etc. We grew up really poor, and a couple of people in particular use to bring us food on a regular basis. It meant so much to my Mom, so guess I try to pay that back. |

| Posted over 4 years ago One thing we do is do business with our local merchants and services when we can. Our bug guy is local, the guy that we get as a 'handy man' is local; I am in a very small community and even though its a teeny bit more expensive, we do business at home to help out our community. Another thing I do on the job............well,this is doable with my outpatient work, but when I have cardiac rehab patients coming for a class and if they have a conflict with their employer, I do eveything I can to make sure they get their visit in rehab and their job not be put at risk. I've missed out on a couple of potty breaks............but that's about it as far as hardship goes. Keeping our community healthy AND employed can be very challenging. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie |

We do the same here. Always trying to help our locals. I do this when I travel as well. I always look for the local coffee shop etc... rather than big chain starbucks... Oh, and you get potty breaks?lol I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS. |
