Okay... this sounds like a ridiculous question.  But, I'm about to start my nursing progam and I just discovered I need a watch.  It makes sense, but I never thought about it.  So, I hate watches!  Does anyone have recommendations for watches?  Digital or analog?  Obvioulsly, I need to be able to read seconds, somehow.

Suggestions?

You could get one that doesn't go on your wrist. They have a lot of options. I even saw a stethescope with a clock on it that counted the seconds.

For nursing school I would get one with a second hand, nothing fancy. Lots of germs get on your watch from touching people so you don't want to use it as your everyday watch. We can not wear watches in the NICU because of that very reason.

Interesting concept.  I have to buy a stethoscope, too!

rusty I can't wear a watch, something about my metabolism makes them unreliable.  I just always purchased a really inexpensive one and attached it to my stethescope or pinned it to my shirt.

I ended up buying an inexpensive one on eBay that has hands and a digital readout!  How's that for cheating!  If it drives me crazy, I'll attach it another apendage!

Not rediculous at all !!!!  I just went through the same thing myself.  Asked my professors what was required because I never wear a watch and didn't want to spend the money on something they didn't approve.  I find that it gets in my way a lot....especially with gloves and handwashing.

I've seen some of the seasoned nurses without watches at all....I wonder if they just use the wall clock.

As for the stethescope......if you can try to get the Litman Cardiology III.....it comes with a CD-ROm of heart, lung, and bowel sounds.

I would think that you would definitley need a watch with a second hand.

I have a swatch watch and I absolutely love it. The best thing about it is that it's water PROOF (not water resistant). That's good if you're washing your hands a lot. Also like that it's really light-weight. There not so cheap, but well worth the investment.

Thats a VERY expensive Stethescope, I have just plain Litman and I hear better out of it then the Doctors expensive $250 one. If it's the heart lung and bowell sounds you are looking for thet have that on Amazon.com for about $15. Just thought you might like to know.

Because most new bp units take the pulse also and far more quickly than one can do it with a watch

There are a lot of choices...don't have to spend a lot of money either. What happens if u lose ur stethoscope and have to borrow ur friend's in a pinch and hers is a cheaper one...learn to use less expensive stethoscopes. And, as far as the watch...here's one site that sells a stethoscope/watch at an affordable rate. Good luck to u!!!

If I forget my watch, I use the wall clock when needed, but I work on step down unit, and our patients are on monitors so they take the pulse for us, and the resps. I have a bunch of watches, all that is required is that you can read it and has a second hand.

I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS.

Got my steth from the Litman man who came to our school.  It was $100 for the cardiology III and has 5 year warranty.  Heard from my professors that it lasts "forever".  I figured it better to spend the cash on a good one that will last long time than buy several less expensive ones.  Seems to be working out for me pretty well.

As for the watch, glad you got a cheapy Rusty!  I have only used my once since clinicals started.....I prefer the one on the wall too ;-)

Nurse mates makes a watch that you can pin on your uniform. It has a second hand and light for visibility on the night shift!  It is a problem if you have to go into isolation!  Timex makes a nurses watch. Cheap, second hand, waterproof and a light for night shift!  There are pens with watches in them with digital second hands!

Please do not put your faith into the dynamap machines.  They might be right, and might be wrong. You need to check manually at least once a shift to be certain. Certain arrhythmias allow you to only hear certain beats which confuses the dynamap.

Have Littman, will travel! I have 2.  The beauty of Littman is that if your tubing wharps or wears out, they will replace if for free + postage! I use the Littman feather weight because I have had a broken neck and can't take too much weight on my neck.  The cardiology model is the top of the line from Littman, however I am not convinced that it is any better than my featherweight Littman.  Just pick what you like with the the features and color you like! They also make one which will enhance sounds. It is designed for people with hearing problems.  I know alot of medics who like it because they can hear over the screaming and traffic!

how about a second hand that sweeps instead of ticks? does anyone else have the problem of getting stuck in the rhythm and losing count? i think a sweeping second hand would resolve that. Where do you find one of those?

Most nursing school programs will insist that you have a sweep second hand.

I'd suggest getting a watch that displays military hours.  Everything you document is in military hours, it makes it easier for you in the beginning untill you adjust to using the correct hours.

Dmazement, i was the same way when i was a kid and teenager, as was my mom. .Every watch we  wore would just..stop.... My mom was forever buying us watches..Lol... I was told by a Dr it was due to the emtal in our body.Who knows, he may have been blowing smoke, but eventually it stopped and i was able to not break them anymore.Lol. But, i havent worn a watch since around 1992.A couple years after i became an R.N., the hospital put it clocks in all rooms, with the second hand. So, i stopped wearing them all together.I always hated wearing watches anyway!!!

I buy cheap Timex's.  Its the one I wont cry over losing, which I do frequently.   Also, I prefer the stretchy band and yank it up to my elbow for hand washing.  I know alot of people feel that's just 'not right'.  Last year they had a sale on the Timex's that have the glowing face at Kmart, I think for $12 each.   My daughter bought me 10 of them.   I have 1 left, lol  <I keep losing them>.   To tell the truth............I use the wall clock in the room lots of times too.  I wouldnt recomend this technique for folks with hairy arms.........that stretchy band will yank yer arm hairs out.  Yelling OUCH while checking a heart rate on a heart patient might scare the crap out of them.  Ive done that too.........Code Brown.   How can I clean that stretchy metal band more often without them rusting?   I've rigged up this thing with a couple of paper clips and attached it to the back of my nametag as well.  I have a watch that attaches with a safety pin to my scrubs too............I JUST SEE THEM BIG NUMBERS BETTER WITH MY GLOW IN THE DARK CHEAPIE TIMEX!!!     1 more thing.............my son brought me a Rolex when he got back from his last tour in Iraq........scared me to death because I was thinking black market, then got really scared when the thing didnt work after 3 days of use.  My daughter told her brother 'Mom broke her Rolex you bought her'.  He called me and said he found it in a gutter in the road in Falluyah <spelling>..........I thought what a dumbass because what if that was a bomb?  He said him and 3 buddies found the box with Rolex logo on it.  They did rocks paper scissors to see if it blew up and Patrick 'won'.  He also got his butt chewed out by his CO and it was confiscated until he got back stateside.  That is how a low paid RN got a Rolex.........knockoff in wartime scenario. Piece of knockoff Rolex wont even work.  Nobody needs to tell me my kid was an idiot for doing that............I've done that alot!

We only have one heart, take care of it!

I hate wristwatches. I've managed to work without one for about the last 10 years.  The BP or pulse OX takes the pulse, and on the occasion that I have to take a manual or an apical, most pt's rooms now have a clock on the wall.  In a pinch, most thermometers have a stopwatch type gadget on them.

My extensive military knowledge is not limited to just being in line at the commissary, I also have extensive military knowledge of the 'Class Six'.

I bought a MUDD watch at Kohl's for about $15 and it works great.

Ginny--I have seen those watches that are necklaces.  If I see one, I will pick it up for you and give it to you when I am in Vegas sometime.

My stethoscope is my husband's Littman Master Cardiology and I absolutely love it.  He used it when he was in nursing school and now I am using it.  He doesn't use a stethoscope too much now that he is in administration (Cardiovascular Services Director).
