Hydrogen Peroxide as Ear Drop?

Posted over 4 years ago Hi, I'm asking nurses here if anyone heard about using Hydrogen Peroxide to clean or moisten hard earwax? This is very important and involves my son. My son's Physical Education class for this semester is swimming. One of the requirements is to have his ears check before the class begins. He went to the doctor to consult and he said he was prescribed "Agua Oxinada" which is Hydrogen Peroxide. A certain amount diluted with water and was instructed to have one drop in both ears 3 x a day. Our first conversation about this treatment was about some 6 days ago. When I called him tonight he was in bed crying "mama my ear is swollen and it hurts so bad I cannot eat!" I panicked! I asked him what was the medication prescribed to him to clean his ears and he said hydrogen peroxide so I asked if he is sure it was prescribed by the doctor, and he said yes. So I told him to go to the hospital (not the doctor who gave him the prescription) and bring that prescription copy or the bottle he had and asked them about it and by golly to have them check on him because I can not believe that hydrogen peroxide be used on ears no matter how weak the solution is, it is corrosive and can burn his eardrums. Please I need help. Any response will be deeply appreciated. |

| Posted over 4 years ago This is the first time I heard that hydrogen peroxide was used for earwax. So, I looked it up in the net. I saw this one... Most doctors remove earwax with a large irrigation syringe and a straight nozzle. They fill it with warm water and hydrogen peroxide. The doctor injects about 1 or 2 quarts into your ear canal. Your earwax is softened and flushed out. The process feels gentle and refreshing. However, the doctors syringe is not safe for self-use. Below are self-use ear syringes. No peroxide is needed. These only need warm water. Ear surgeons only use warm water. Our syringe has a safety angled nozzle which puts the tip at the beginning of your ear canal, about halfway to your eardrum. The tip can't reach your eardrum. It leaves room for drainage. Your ear canals are cleaned by the quick circulation of warm water. Your eardrums also get cleaned. You're in the comfort of a warm shower when you use the device. It feels gentle and refreshing. It removes all earwax build-up. You'll save time and money on doctors visits. Thousands are in worldwide use since 1994. here's the site... http://www.earclear.com/ Your son should've used warm water only for personal use. The doctor was wrong I guess in letting your son do the procedure himself. |

| Posted over 4 years ago One of my son's gets gobs of earwax, almost like rocks in his ears. His ped. prescribed colace drops in ears, followed by a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. The colace (yes the stool softener stuff) is supposed to soften the wax, and the hydrogen peroxide mix, helps flush it all out. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I kept my son's cellphone ringing for the last 4 hours now checking on his progress. He went to the hospital and was prescribed Amoxiclav and Moxil tablets. He was told that his ear has an infection. I did not know how he did the irrigation or flushing of his ears so I asked him and he said when there are discharges he would use cotton buds to clean them out. The irony is he is a nursing student. Apparently, he has not encountered or has not been taught anything about medications in his 2nd year in nursing. I pushed him to go see a doctor to find out what went wrong. He thought he can just take the pain and swelling in his ears and go to school tomorrow because he does not want to miss classes. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Cotton buds? Do you mean Qtips? He may have unwittingly pushed the wax into the canal further causing the pain. Every ENT I have ever worked with has always said this. Never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow. This sounds silly, until you think about it. Almost all the commercial ear cleaners on the market have peroxide in them. |

I've always felt that any fluid/drainage produced by the human skull is so gross. That 60cc syringe with 20g iv tubing was how we did it..........ewwwwwwwwww..............bad memory for a second there, sorry. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie |

| Posted over 4 years ago I have used hydrogen peroxide many times to clean my ears. I am also a regular swimmer. I never used a syringe though. I just take a paper cup with the diluted peroxode in it and squish the top of the cup a little so it sort of looks like a funnel. Then I carefully pour the solution into my ear with my head completely tilted to the side, let the peroxide bubble for a little, then tilt my head back in the other direction and let the peroxide drain from my ear onto a washcloth. It works wonders everytime and I have never had any problems with this. Perhaps Deb is right about the cotton swabs pushing the wax further into the ear canal.

| Posted over 4 years ago It sounds like he had 'swimmers ear'. Some people are prone to ear infections. He probably needs to buy ear plugs, and be consistant with there use when swimming. Aquaear is a recommendation for swimmers ear, but obviously if an earache persists antibiotics may be required. http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/ear/swimmer_ear.html |

| Posted over 4 years ago http://www.getridofthings.com/get-rid-of-ear-wax.htm Hope this article helps! Once too much is built up it isn't always easy to do it yourself. Especially, if an infection has begun. If in doubt, always go to your doctor of course. So sorry for him...ear aches are so painful. |

| Posted over 4 years ago He had not been to swimming lesson because of the pain and swelling. I t happened before he was able to start swimming. I am very cautious when using Hydrogen Peroxide as it can irritate and burn skin specially the very soft and delicate part of the body like ears. I panicked when he said he used the liquid in his ears. I told him to go to another doctor and get some prescription for the swelling and infection. He is fine now. He cannot go swimming though, at least, for 2 more weeks. Thanks to you fellow members. I appreciate your input as well as concern. Thanks a lot. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I'm sorry to hear about your son. Earaches are awful! Are you sure it was the peroxide that caused his problem? Everyone is different, but I use STRAIGHT peroxide in both of my ears about twice a month. I have yet to have a problem with it. I lay on my side and use an eyedropper to fill my ear canal with 100% peroxide and let it foam and "sizzle" for 30 mins. Then I turn over and let it all drain out onto a paper towel, after which I use a Q-tip to dry out my ear. Then I switch ears. My doctor told me to do this a few years ago when I had an awful earache due to a wax impaction. It does a great job. I also know many other people who do or have done this. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Be careful using certain types of earplugs for swimming. The flange type (they look like little silicone trees) can cause a ruptured eardrum. It happened to me a few years ago. If the earplug makes a really good seal (as it should) and you pull it out too fast or at the wrong angle the suction can rupture your eardrum. IT REALLY FREAKIN" HURTS!!!! |
