I have recently passed NCLEX after completing my ADN. I am in the process of applying for jobs now and would like to ask advice on some of the following:

I know hospital expereince is a must for a new graduate, but during my clinical rotations I never really liked the hospital setting and I am dreading having to do my years clinical experience.

I am very interested in home health, especially working with children or school/public health.

What is the best type of unit to get experience?

Thanks for any advice.

Pediatrics, Pediatric ICU.  Many places ie hospitals require two years experience for home health just so you're prepared.  Whatever you do, especially for pediatric home health care, get vent experience.

In home health you work with autonomy, your doing patient care, hands on and will have to be experienced.  I hate to say it, but the hospital would be the best place to get your experience, especially if you want to do home health with kids.  Around here, finding a nurse with peds experience for home health is a huge bonus for agencies.  It's worth it to go ahead and do at least a year or 2 of hospital time in.  You worked so hard to get your license, so might as well protect it and get experience so you wont hurt anybody when you get out there.  Home health is a blast, I love it when I did it.

We only have one heart, take care of it!

Yes, I agree - thks for the great advice. I guess being a new nurse is not easy, don't know why I feel so unsure of myself. I guess I feel the clinical experience is very limited in this country.
