Posted over 5 years ago I am a 51 year old LPN, yes there is room and plenty of it. The Gals I work with treat me like one of them. I now speak 4 dialects of female. Good luck.

Posted over 5 years ago There is plenty of room for us. We make up about 6% of the workforce last I heard. There are about a dozen of us out of nearly 80 nurses that work in our department. We're gaining. After a few years, you learn to live with drama.

Posted over 5 years ago Drama, RNdude the master of the understatement. Tho I have learned that when one of my collegues vents to me, she isn't suggesting that I fix it. That is just testosterone poisioning effecting reasoning. No just sit back let the gal vent, she will let you know when she is done. Then don't fall into the trap of trying to fix it. Let it go. The women I work with, are all very independant, strong and intelligent. They can handle what ever comes their way. So be a good listener and observe.

Posted over 5 years ago I for one want to see more men is nursing. A female predominent work force is probably one of the problems with nursing. I never hear our male nurses compl, aining about this or that doc. They work well together. Nurses have traditionally "eaten their young". We have created a toxic work environment that I doubt would exist if males dominated. I may be in trouble for saying this...but hey...it's for the sake of discussion!

Posted over 5 years ago oldnurse- I have wondered the same thing...how would our profession be different if males were more involved??? Nursing has room for everybody.

Posted over 5 years ago ljr- only 4 dialects of female, huh? how many does that leave to learn????Personally I don't see skin color, ethnicity or gender. I see good or bad nurses or nurses who need guidance or teaching. I see nurses. period. Hey your good listener comment goes for the gals as well as the guys. Sometimes venting is not about fixing, as you know, it;s just about venting!

Posted over 5 years ago Thanks galilp. At last count wasn't the last count of the female population of the planet something like 63billion.That just leaves 62billion999million999thousand996 to go. I am thinking about night classes. I see my female nurses offering a level on nurturing that they have been cultivating since they were young. As a man in this profession, I am just now learning how to nurture on those levels. My female nurses are teaching me by example. As for men being a sort of leveling influence, I can see that. When I was building houses, and a woman came to work on the site, you could see and hear the change in "climate" . Anything is possible I suppose.

Posted over 5 years ago ljr, you're a real hoot! I have to say though that I too wish there were more males in nursing...I love my job and the women I work with but men (in general) have more of the "just don't care" attitude when it comes to office politics. There just isn't all of the backbiting and nails out catfights that women (by nature?) just seem to be more prone to. BTW girls, don't let those guys fool you either...I worked with an ALL MALE night crew (not nursing) for a while while I took a break from medicine, and they can complain and gossip with the best of the women! Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

Posted over 5 years ago duane said: If you are teachable, you can pursue anything. I am ten years younger and am going for it. If I was 53, I would still go for it. The health industry needs nurses. When the nursing shortage dilemma becomes more of a main vien crisis, who the heck is going to care if you are a 55 y/o registerd nurse. The best advice I can give is, take care of you, so you can take care of the patient.
