Posted over 4 years ago There was an article years ago in Dear Abby that made me decide to become an organ donor, I will share once I find it. What made you decide to become and organ donor? |

| Posted over 4 years ago I have been an organ donor for years. If something should happen to me, I decided that I want to save someone else's life. I guess I decided when I became a RN and saw the beauty in this gift... I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I became aan organ donor when they first started listing it on state driver's license. I don't even remember thinking about why...I just did! A friend told me that you can also get med alert bracelets that say organ donor. Jane |

| Posted over 4 years ago I've also been an organ donor for yrs. Someone back in college mentioned there was no way he would be because they can 'pull the plug' if you're an organ donor. I decided NOT to adopt that jaded viewpoint and hv been an organ donor since! :-) I just renewed my licence and and again a donor (with all my heart!). |

| Posted over 4 years ago I became an organ donor because otherwise it seems like such a waste. Someone might as well benefit. Once I expire, it won't do me or my loved ones any good, unless they are a recipient. Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans ~ John Lennon Scott |

| Posted over 4 years ago Not only have I decided to donate my organs- knowing it would benefit someone else when I no longer need my tissues But I try to donate blood when I see the red cross set up with their mobile donor bus, on campus regularly. Maybe they have conned me into it (since I am type 0+) as if they are vampires! -Angela--'--,--{@ |

| Posted over 4 years ago I decided to become a donor after coming into the healthcare field. If I have any parts that can be used to help someone else, I think they should be used. It would be selfish not to give for the last time. God gave me perfectly good parts, I think I should pass them on. A Proud Redneck Lovin' the Country Life |

| Posted over 4 years ago It is a no brainer. What on earth are you going to do with you organs when you are dead? If you can help someone with just one part of your body. Why not? I have seen what organ transplants can do. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I decided to be an organ donor when I first got my drivers license and they asked me. I never thought twice about it. I also have a friend whom I met in nursing school who has been on dialysis since she was twelve. She is now 25. She has no working kidneys. They are the size if a small shriveled orange. She had just gotten a transplant when we started school together. During second semester her transplant rejected and she had to go back on dialysis and have it removed. Well we have the same blood type so naturally I went and got tested. But because of a blood transfusion that was not treated properly during the transplant she has so many antibodies against everything it is going to be really really hard to find a match. So being a donor doesn't always have to be something you do after you die. If we had been a match I would have given her one of mine. "Softly. deftly, music shall caress you. Feel it, hear it, secretly possess you...." |

| Posted over 4 years ago I became an organ donor when I got my driver's license, some 24 years ago. I guess I just felt that my organs would do more good for someone else rather than taking them to the grave with me. At that point, they'll be no more good to me. I would suggest that everyone talk to their loved ones left behind to make sure they are on board with your decision. My decision to be an organ donor is in the minority in the African American community so I had to make sure that my husband, mother, sister all knew what my wishes were. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I became an organ donor since I knew it would help other people. I am already a living donor, having given my mom a kidney 5 years ago...no ill effects, and one of the most selfless acts I have ever done! Would do it again in a heartbeat! | Posted over 4 years ago I became an organ donor when I got my first state ID. I feel that if a part of me can prolong or save the life of another human being, then it gives my own life more meaning. |

| Posted over 4 years ago You betcha! I made that decision a long time ago. All my family knows about it. I even told my husband that I want to give myself to a medical school, (I still have to check it out), take what you want and cremate the rest! If I can continue to do some good, take what you need, I won't be using it any more! Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that stood it's ground.

| Posted over 4 years ago I am not only an organ donor, but also a full body donor. They can have any useful organs, including skin, and when they have all they need there, they can use whats left for medical science. I know many people do not agree and I DO know what they do with the bodies. But if I can help some future doctor or nurse learn firsthand about the human body as opposed to working on pigs or cats, it will benefit their future patients. It was either that or cremation, and why not benefit education if I can. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Both my wife and I are donors. My wife decided after working as a surg tech with the transplant cluster at her hospital. She saw the good and the bad of this wonderful process, and felt the good far out weighed the bad. I decided after my father was placed on the active heart transplant list many years ago. He is now off the list due to his age and he is finally taking better care of himself. I think of how much better his quality of life could be right now if he would have made lifestyle changes sooner. |

| Posted over 4 years ago I'm an organ donor too. I wonder if a medical school would want my body though? There goes our new MD's for the future.........'flunked out because screamed innappropriatly when cadaver bag unzipped'. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie |

Angie, you are TOO funny! I hope they can find a way to transplant a sense of humor. I know plenty of people who could benefit from it! Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that stood it's ground.

| Posted over 4 years ago I am not sure when I decided to become an organ donor, however I know I have been since I started driving and it was put on the driver's licenses. To me it seemed logical to donate to help others, since I had been helping as a Red Cross volunteer since I was 15. And I gave blood from when I was 16, until we found out I had dormant Osteomyelitis (shortly after my last active duty and it went active after a training accident). Now, with the infection cured by amputation, depending on the need, they want me as a "live donor" for blood. My blood type is AB rH negative. If my blood wood be accepted, I would donate every chance I would have. From my mother's records of my original injury in 1974, we know I recieved about 20 units of blood then. And then again after a post-bleed after my gastrict by-pass in 2002, I received at least 10 units. I really believe I have had more than my fair share of "second chances", and want to make sure I give back more than I have received. God bless all, Paul God bless all, Paul |

| Posted about 4 years ago I cannot comprehend why somebody wouldn't want to be an organ donor? I always have been, my husband is, my kids are (yes, we've discussed the untimely demise of my young children with them). |

| Posted over 3 years ago I do not think I decided to become an organ donor, I just did. Why would anyone want to keep their organs, when they could save someones life? Like someone posted before...........IT IS A NO BRAINER. John L. Racher RN, BSN, MSRN-BC

| Posted over 3 years ago I decided to become an organ donor one day when i realized that if the time came and I need an organ then I would want one. So if I'm willing to accept an organ I should be willing to give one.

| Posted over 3 years ago I had a friend in middle school who needed a kidney transplant, she spent 3 years on the waiting list and died waiting. No parent should ever have to watch their child die like that. When I turned 18 i became an organ donor, I figure once I'm dead and gone it's not going to matter so my organs should be used to help someone else get a new lease on life. |
