Hi, my name is Lisa and I am new to the link. I am an RN with 24 years experience and have my master's in gerontological nursing. I also love psych nursing and substance abuse. I was recently offered a position as a health administrator for a community correctional facility - I was psyched - BUT, my husband, sister, and father think it will be too dangerous for me to accept. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, experiences? Thanks alot.

Hi, my name is Peg, from GA. I worked for a year at a GA workpcamp(ol' chain gang) for an agency. Worked Mon-Fri, 0800-1300 and on-call weekends. Great $$. After approx. 8-10 mos. the agency finally sent me to a training course for nurses working in correctional facilities. I was my own boss and my own employee and until I went to this 2-day class I had no idea how many things I was doing wrong. I was to nice, to trusting, to easy, to kind, to sucked in. Hey, I can't help it. I did a couple of calls at Autry Prison. I didn't like it only cause greater than 90% of the guys I saw were really just trying to get out of the details of the day. They would give some of the best symptoms! The prison guards were constantly telling what low-life the prisoners were. It was horrible. I just wasn't used to that type of environment and it became too much for me. I at least have to have the other half meet me half way and I didn't like the negative attitudes of the Corrections Officers (they probably had good reason for their comments---just too negative for me!). Good luck if you try it. You might like it. I did always feel safe inside the walls, I will say that!

I worked in correctional nursing at the county level for 4 years and it was a wonderful experience, however when I moved up to the state level that was an entirely different ball game that I could not do. I would go back to the county level in a heartbeat

I live in Nashville, TN. I work at the maximum security prison. I love my job. The rewards really are there if you look. The drawback here is the salary. I previously lived in Baltimore, MD. The salary there was exactly double what I make here. The cost of living here is about the same. So, my salary is one half what I made before and my bills are the same. I may have to go to Balto.
