Posted over 5 years ago I've been an LPN for nearly 15 years. I got it in as fast as I could, however getting back to school for my RN and futhering my education has been a problem, secondary to the most imortant things in life! My kids and husband have needed me here, and with 5 kids it just hasn't been financially feasible for us yet...I KNOW my time is coming! = ) Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

Posted over 5 years ago I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. However, getting pregnant and then again and again and again put my plans on hold for awhile, I worked as a CNA before becoming a nurse. This only strengthened my desire to become a nurse. My oldest child died at age 4 which sent me into a tail spin. We had alot of good nurses during her care and I vowed to become one. I went to nursing school at age 30 with 3 small children and no husband. It was difficult but I was determined to make it. That was 27 years ago.

Posted over 5 years ago I did the nursing basic early on. Just waited until my older years to formally continue my education! I agree with charleneswain----- Just get started!!! We need nurses, all are welcome. And I firmly believe the older students bring a level of maturity to their studies. I have a fondness for the adult students :)

Posted over 5 years ago Like I said in my comments, I got married at 19, I wanted to go to college at age 19, but it seems faith was against it. I finally got my chance when I was 22 years old. I enrolled in Moreno Valley Community College. I took a beginners college course English class and took some computer classes, at that time Microsoft was still using Word Perfect and operating under DOS. I originaly wanted to major as a Medical Transcriptionist. I am a Unit Secretary now, so I do transcribe doctor's orders and enter the orders in the computer, and plus I went to computer school 4 years ago, and got Certified as a Computer Operator. I finally went back to Community College in 2003, to finish where I left off in 2000, from all my previous nursing prerequisites, and from finishing a CNA course in 1999.Computers, and Nursing will always be my favorite careers. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Posted over 5 years ago I had to give this some thought before I answered this question. I sure would like to come up with some deep philisophical answer. Something that would make this group go AWWW all at once. The truth really is as basic as "A'INT NO MONEY IN IT", I was wrapped up in making the god-awmity dollar. Then one day I found that, that wasn't the path God wanted me on. So here I am.

Posted over 5 years ago Good question CDNurse. Just like ljr I"ve thought long and hard about how to answer this. My reason is not his though. I was not making money before nursing. My real story is so extraordinarily unusual, I'm not sure anyone would believe it even if I shared it. Because of that, as a rule I usually don't share it. Because I'm not used to sharing it, maybe I'm not ready to--it's out of my comfort zone to go there. Give me time. I was not having children, or working much of another career, and I never wanted to be a nurse, or thought that I would be...It was not my goal in life. I wanted something very very different. My dad wanted me to go into nursing when I was young, and it didn't take me one half a split second to say no. Having said all that, I have to say that now I wish I had gone into nursing when I was young, and I love nursing. I love it so much! It was my mistake in a sense to stay away so long. I just had to follow my own dreams first, and be totally convinced it would not be possible for me to have my life's desire before I could come to nursing--and I'm not sorry for that. That journey has the the trip of a lifetime--literally. That journey gave me a healthy, mature outlook to bring to nursing, where I have to empathize with patients who have to adjust to not having the health to have the life they want....

Posted over 5 years ago Mostly because for 45 years, i have been letting someone else make all the decisions...first my mother, then my husband...even the fact that I ultimately started back to school just two months ago after a two false starts and a 15 year hiatus (family joke is that i am on the 30 yr plan) was almost totally due to the fact that he decided he was burnt out at his job and I should do something more to take some of the financial burden off him. I have been DYING to do something more meaningful with my life for years, but now i have waited so long that i wonder if what it is costing me is going to be worth it...

Posted over 5 years ago Someone said that Life is what happens when your busy making plans! So true! I was married when I was so young, a mother before I got my drivers liscence and did a college degree in Art all before 22.... the next 20 years flew! three kids, a divorce, various part time jobs in Dr's offices and hospitals saw me with three older kids, a hankering to 'get in on the action' and finally some time in my life with grown up kids to pursue something 'higher' in life. My sister thinks I am just so used to "looking after" people that I needed to make it my permanent role in life, once my kids grew up.. could be something in that. I feel like I'm useful and fullfilled when Im fussing over someone I guess .. hee hee.. so Nursing was perfect for me. I had the maturity and discipline to stick it out and get the most out of the course at my age so for me... its been the BEST decision I've made. Ive passed the 40 mark now and hope to nurse for 20yrs.. fingers crossed

Posted over 5 years ago I never considered a career in nursing because all I ever wanted was to be a police officer. I spent 4 years in the Air Force (to get some age and exp) and then was a police officer (deputy sheriff) for 10 years. After 10 years I decided that I needed to find something else! My mom recommended that I take a few college classes in the medical field. I already had a bachelor's degree and swore that I would NEVER go back to college. Well, I gave in and took anatomy and physiology and LOVED it. Nursing just seems like the perfect field for me and I will graduate in May! Better late than never!!

Posted over 5 years ago I so much wanted to go into the Air Force. When I wanted to do that they were known as WAF. The Navy was WAVES and the army was the WACS. I had it all planned. Go to the service and let them pay for my nursing school. Well, I let adults talk me out of it. Get this, I was told about women going into the service: "Only queers and whores go into the service" That was 1968. A young lady I know was talking about going into the service. I encouraged her to go for it. I have lost contact with her so not sure if she will do that or not. In any case, she told me she still hears the same ignorant remark. To this day I regret not doing what I wanted. I was such a stubborn kid I cannot believe that I listened to the dummies. But, then again, joining the service in 1968 was not a very popular thing to do, and, I may have been saved from Nam.

Posted over 5 years ago For the past ten years, I have been trying to find myself. I went to cosmetology school, I was a waitress, secretary, I worked in retail and the last ten years, I have worked with animals and have loved it. My aunt died a few months ago after years of battling cancer. She was always happy that I worked with animals. She was a nurse for all her adult life. She died at 54 years old. She loved nursing and often talked about it. She was very active in education and nursing issues. I was not real close with her. We talked maybe once or twice a year, she lived out of town, but the last 6 months of her life we had some really good conversations and I really grew to admire her. I guess chosing nursing makes me feel closer to her. She was very good at what she did and I feel I need to continue her work. I enjoy people and taking care of sick animals has given me some knowledge of the medical side of life. I learned that working with animals, that they are, like humans, scared and unsure of what is going to happen to them. I enjoy bringing them comfort and feel that I can do that for humans as well. I am hoping to make a change in my life and have security for my future. Who knows maybe I can make a positive change in someone else's life as well. Anyway, this is what I want to do and it just feels right, so I am now in school to be a human nurse.

Posted over 5 years ago Deep down, I always knew that I wanted to be a nurse. I would admire my mom when I was a little girl as she left to go to work in her nurse's uniform. I didn't pursue nursing right away because I thought that there was some other mission out there for me. I recently completed my bachelor's degree in business administration at the beginning of this year. It took a lot of hard work and determination to get it done (with a family of two kids -n-all), not to mention money! The degree has opened doors for me in the organization that I currently work for; however, I don't know that I would be happy primarily doing administrative support, even on an executive level. It does not seem appealing nor rewarding. So, here I am. I am going to follow my heart this time and go with the nursing field, hopefully until I retire. Wish me luck. : )

I feel anxious to get my prerequisite classes rolling but I have to wait until next month to register; classes start in January '08. Plugging into this site will help me to stay 'connected' with the nursing world. I am glad that I found this link. |

Posted over 5 years ago I always wanted to be a nurse but i didn't do well in high school, it was a private school and I was not pushed to my potential. So I went through most of my life thinking I was not smart enough to go to nursing school and my ex-mother-in law freguently told me I was stupid because she didn't like me. So,I had three kids and homeschooled them for 9 years and was a stay at home mom. Then my then husband got out of the Army and became an artist. The term starving artist is true. After being a stay at home mom for around 18 years I needed to get a job to help pay bills. I went to Nurse Aide training and fiished top of my class. My Teacher told me that I should go on to Nursing school. After about 6 months of working as an aide I decided to give it a try so I enrolled in college to take my prerequisites and got all A's. Wow, I thought, I'm not stupid after all. I can do this! I graduated from nursing school in May of 05 at the age of 42. My girls are very proud of me and call me their hero for doing it. I'm very glad i did. I really don't wish I had done it sooner either, the timing was right when I went.

Posted over 5 years ago When I was about 22 I tried working as a CNA in a nursing home and was taken aback on how the elderly were treated as a job/object rather than being take care of as tender human beings. The job itself was something I could love and I even had passing thoughts to take up nursing and eventually become a midwife, but the nursing home experience horrified me and sent me in another direction. So, after close to nine years in the Navy, a husband, and two children (about to have my third) later I've decided I have grown enough as a person to become a nurse and get into nursing school.

Posted about 5 years ago Kay said: Your response is very honest and heart felt. I'm in a similar situation. I have never considered becoming a nurse until now. I'm turning 31 in a couple of days and think I'm having a pre-mid life crisis! I need to make some changes for the better. How did you finally realize you wanted to become a nurse? What do you love the most about it?
