Posted over 4 years ago I have worked for four years in a hospital as aCNA 2 acute care. I just started my LPN program. Question- some of by classmate feel that I have a edge because of my job. I feel like it's harder because I know what can go wrong and how fast it happens. I also feel like some don't seem to come to class ready and the class has to play catchup for them at times. I have been out of school for twenty years has school ready changed that much that you can get by just showing up? |

| Posted over 4 years ago Congrats on starting the LPN program! Good for you. I am also a CNA and an EMT who is starting the nursing program. I will be starting the Nursing program either here in Georgia this fall OR in Colorado if my husband can find a job there. WE aren't too excited about Georgia. In fact, I am miserable here. Too far from family. A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!

Congrats on getting in! Yes, you do have an edge, a good one. You already knows that this job entails us to be able to think on our feet, so you are already watching for the inevitable, remember though that there are many skills yet to be learned and how you apply them will determine how good a nurse you will be. Yes, I have the same problem at my school with classmates falling behind and then it catch up time. This is where people get weeded out if they are unable to keep up. Just do what you can and study hard and you will do well! I wish you the best of luck at school! |

| Posted over 4 years ago Congrats to you, goldielocks! I would not have made it through clinical without the help of the CNAs in our class. God, I felt like an idiot most of the time. The CNAs in class with me taught me more about patient care than anything in the books or anything from any instructor. I am forever grateful for that. You might have a hard time with "textbook answers" vs. "real world" answers. Just accept whatever the instructor says as the gospel truth and get through the program. As you have already discovered, some people think they can just show up and it will be enough to get by. Of course, that is not going to work in nursing school, and they will not make it unless they change their attitude. Best of luck to you and keep us posted on how you are doing! Let us know if you need any help. There is a lot of experience here to draw from - don't be afraid to use that. peace Walter |

| Posted over 4 years ago Being a cna first does help. Not only to make you a better nurse but in the knowledge of some of the things. It also hinders you a little. At first I found it really hard to get out of the cna mindset and not run to the nurse when something wasnt right, because well..... I am the nurse. But my cna's really love that I have been there done that because I know how hard it is and I am always willing to help. "Softly. deftly, music shall caress you. Feel it, hear it, secretly possess you...." |

| Posted about 4 years ago Yes you have an Edge. But that's a good thing don't feel bad about it. Now the class may help some play catch up but when it comes do to it the weak will be weeded out. So don't worry it'll all work out in the long run. Nursing it's how I live my life..... |
