I wanted to ask other nurses what they think of a current situation I'm in and what advice might help me.

I moved to Texas about 2 years ago. I have had many bad experiences with trying to find a job I'm actually happy with.I originally started out in management, but after 3 positions, decided maybe just to get out of management. The last position I had was as an ENT supervisor at a large clinic in Houston. My preceptor was an African-American nurse. You'll see why that detail is important in a minute.

Anyway, this nurse was very rude and condescending to me the minute she started training me. Conviently, my boss went on vacation 2 days after I started, so I had no-one to turn to. After 2 weeks of being near teras , I finally decided I'd had enough. I did confide to a fellow manager who told me I was being treated this way by this nurse b/c I was white. I dismissed it and thought nothing of it.

I did however confront this nurse and I told her it just wasn't working out with her being my preceptor. I explained it was nothing personal, sometimes people just don't click. I was given a different orientation schedule as a result. I thought all was ok, when the following week, I was accused of making racist comments. I was never told who said I made them, or what I supposedly said. I felt railroaded and ended up resigning.

Here I am close to a year later. I've been working agency, but getting cancelled alot. I decided to sign up for some PRN pools in hospitals close to my house. I was even encouraged to apply by fellow nurses. What's weird is they seem enthusiastic at first, but then nothing.I feel so dejected. I have never used that clinic as a reference, but I'm getting concerned that somehow, this is coming back to haunt me.

Any advice? I even called an HR yesterday and left a message to have the HR person return my call. No response. The amount of disrespect to nurses here is appalling. It's like they could care less about you. It's really starting to depress me.

Wow, that's quite a sticky situation! First of all, I have to say that you should have IMMEDIATELY gone to HR and filed a grievance in reference to the racist comments situation. If you didn't do it then you shouldn't wear that label. At least the other nurse would have had to face you. I know you said that you didn't know for sure who made the accusations, but someone does. Not to mention the fact that other people TOLD you that you were being treated badly because of your race...that right there says that there is a known problem in that facility. If you couldn't get any satisfacton from that then there are other people to contact. The Board of Directors or the agency in charge of regulating healthcare facilities in your state. Maybe you should backtrack and file a complaint now if this woman is still employed there. I know it's a year later, but you have  more ammunition now. Talk to people you've worked with since then and just outright ask if this is the reason for the cold shoulder. If so then you REALLY have ammo.! Slander/libel isn't something to be taken lightly! Good luck!!!

Additionally, there is a service that will pretend to be a potential employer (for a fee)  and check your references to see if someone is badmouthing you.   Someone mentioned it on a nursinglink forum a few months back.

DO YOUR OWN INVESTIGATION. DON'T YOU HAVE A FRIEND WHO CAN PRETEND TO BE A POTENTIAL EMPLOYER? I WILL DO IT FOR YOU...FREE.

ANYHOW IF THEY ARE GIVING OUT ANY INFORMATION OTHER THAN HIRE AND END OF EMPLOYMENT DATES, AND WHETHER THEY WOULD HIRE YOU AGAIN, YOU CAN SUE THEM FOR SLANDER....

I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS.

Thanks for the advice. I think the one judleern gave along with the others will be an avenue I will pursue. My husband did want me to fight this, but at the time I was so demoralized I didn't know where to start. I had been sending correspondance to HR while this woman was treating me unfairly. Not to be paraniod, but everyone in HR from top to bottom was African American. I felt they decided I was guilty as soon as I was accused. It was clear this nurse was out to get me.

My boss, when she returned did quote a supposed statement I said, and I almost fell off the chair . It was ludicrous , and I know I did not say that statement. I left thinking that this would be proved false. Later, I was told that several people said I made several racist statements. I asked repeatedly what I supposedly said, and who said I made such statements. I said I had the right to know my accusers and what I said to defend myself. I was stonewalled and never given an answer. By then, I saw the writing on the wall, and resigned. I did put in my resignation letter that it was under duress that I resigned.

I was so shell shocked  by then, that I just started picking up contracts with agencies. Now, it seems with the economy, cancellation of agency  is being encouraged to cut costs. I have applied to 2 different facilities only toi be ignored. It's hard not to get depressed and paranoid.

Hello ckruszk,

I am new to the boards and read your statement regarding your work situation.  In my opinion, she is not racist, but women in "higher positions" tend to be condescending to their lower-rank employees, regardless of sex or ethnicity.  Women with a little bit of education will remind you, and others, constantly of your lack of education and/or job role, compared to theirs, and how much better they are compared to you.  I hate to say this, but women in command sometimes power and ego-trip.

How is your situation currently with your manager/employer?

Wow, workinprogress! That's a little sexist, isn't it? I know LOTS of women in "higher positions" who are never condescending to anyone, regardless of rank, age, creed, gender, etc. I also know lots of men who aren't as well. With that being said I also know a FEW women AND men who are just nasty to everyone. Maybe this has just been an unfortunate thing that you have seen in your life?

Paranoid no. Your facts explain everything. Follow your gut feelings. If not anything else you will grow from this experience and be stronger in the next situation.

I was not in a lower position. We were both RN's with BSNs. She was supposed to be precepting me. Not treating me like a 2 year old child. We were both supervisors. As a matter of fact, we were the only RN's on that floor , so that was their explanation for me having to have her as a preceptor.I finally got enough and siad"No more."

I tried getting help, but all of HR were African American and did not seem interested in helping me in anyway. I called a nurse who i liked in nursing education, and she said she `didn't think I came across as a racist person at all.

The best advice I can give you is to move one....try to find something else.  Maybe a docs office or another hospital or whatever it takes.  I also had to give up a job that I loved and was so good at just due to a rude, greedy, miserable LPN who just isn't happy with her life, so she takes it out on everyone else.  I got super upset, but it is just a job.  My life means more to me than a job.  SO,,,,we are super tight around our house right now until I finish nursing school in 2 years. UGHHH...sounds like forever, but it will be over before I know it.  Because I love nursing!!!  I will pray for you girl!

A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!
