Hello everyone!  We have a new baby!  His name is Max and he is 9 wks old.  he is a border collie.  Does anyone know anything specific about this breed that we should know?  Any pointers?  So far he is really smart, plays fetch with my daughter and is getting the concept of potty training pretty quick and he is very eager to please.  Do you have to have papers to do agility with them?  I thought this would be a good thing for my daughter to do with her dog (she's nine).  Any advice, comments or otherwise would be appriciated!  Thanks and have a great holiday!

Lots and lots of exercise!  Take puppy to the dog park when old enough and socialize Max with lots of people and dogs.  Contact your local border collie club, there are hundreds all over the country and they can tell you about agility clubs etc.  A local vet can also tell you about agility.

Groom puppy every day and get him used to feet being handled.  I use the dremel nail care rather than clippers.  Be consistent with training and watch It's  Me or the Dog on animal planet.  Victoria Stillwell is absolutely wonderful in tips on training.

Hey there fellow Border Collie owner!  Border Collies are very smart.  You have to really keep them busy.  First of all, don't yell at your border collie.  They respond very well with a normal tone of voice and are sensitive to yelling.  You can break a good dog's spirit by yelling.....

They need plenty of exercise.  Remember, they are a working dog breed, and have to be kept busy.  First start off with your normal training...sit, stay, come and leash work.  Be sure to take him out and get him well-socialized.

Border Collies are susceptible to seizures,... also eye problems and hip displaysia as well.  I lost a good one at 1 year old due to that.  My other one, Shamrock, is healthy and now 4 years old.  I take him to the nursing home where I work, as he is very well socialized, doesn't jump on the residents and is very gentle with them.

Did you get your pup from a breeder?  Were the parents cleared of these medical problems?  Just things to look out for.  Shamrock is ABCA (American Border Collie Association) registered.  This association tends to not follow confirmation standards like the AKC does.  ABCA is dedicated to what the breed was intended for... working stock.  I got Shamrock from a cattle farmer in West Virginia, and watched his parents work the cattle.  Unfortunately for me, going to school and working, I haven't had the time to dedicate to teach him stock work, but he's excellent in other areas as mentioned above.

What colors are your border?  Shamrock is a tri-colored, prick eared, smooth coat.  He's mainly black and white with the traditional blaze up the face, but with a touch of brown on the hind legs.

Good luck and have fun with your Border Collie!!!  Nothing like 'em, I tell ya!!
