Will new nursing communication devices really cut down on hospital noise?

Posted almost 6 years ago According to one of today's articles, new communication devices are being purchased by a hospital in Texas in the interest of cutting down on hospital noise. Is it likely that such devices will do so, and if so do you think they will grow in popularity at other hospitals including your own? |

| Posted over 5 years ago No--they usually beep and buzz loudly, especially when they are not working properly, which is usually 98% or the time. Use the money to add to nurse staffing and we won't need to yell out for each other when we need help, but there's nobody in sight anywhere. |

| Posted over 5 years ago I'm not yet into nursing, but I feel Kay is right on the money where would you possibly have room on your person to carry a radio? How reliable would that be after being treated roughly in extreme situations ,that all nurses come into contact with. I had worked in security, at the Imperial Palace, Hotel and Casinoin Biloxi,MS. The radios we had to carry were constantly being sent out for repairs. The more staffing like kay said sounds to me to be a better problem solver. |

Kay has a point. I think if they are working with silence, with no disturbance then it will definitely grow.

| Posted over 4 years ago At the hospital I worked for we also used SpectraLink and they were nice. The nurses enjoyed them and I had the occassion to use one when I would make my rounds gathering EKG information from the floors. We were a small Cardiac unit so the only times the nurses really needed them was when they would return patients after testing, to get STAT ER orders. They worked well. But I do agree with Kay as well. |

| Posted about 4 years ago We have a device that sounds like the spectralink, but maybe ours is not as reliable. Plus they add alot of noise to the floor. I guess my favorite thing about it is that I can call telemetry and get an immediate report. Our device is little, smaller than a cell phone and it attaches to my scrub top with a special clip, so not so bulkey as radios. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie |

| Posted about 3 years ago I have a friend that uses the vocera badges/phones and she said that it has greatly reduced overhead paging and really facilitated the communication in her hospital. www.vocera.com/products/devices.aspx.

| Posted about 3 years ago Even if the badges are small light weight and work well we could still work well with more staff. |
