I think it's none of anyone's business if a doctor or nurse smokes.

As an exsmoker, i feel i can say  that smoking is totally disgusting habit. As health professionals, they should see that, and try to take steps to quit.I know how hard it is to quit, and it is easier said than done.Good luck to all who do try to quit!!

   I see sick people.

As a former smoker, I sometimes believe I can sense how ill many smokers feel.

Nicotine is addictive. Today, members of the medical profession consider addicts as ill, and long past the point of controlling the disease by themselves.

Addicts need help, not our contempt.

Its none of anyones business...just as long as none of them preech about the harm smoking does...then theres a problem.

Why would you care? Do you find your patients who smoke disgusting?

Back in the day, it was my job as a candy striper to empty all the ashtrays in the patient rooms.  Later as a Unit Secretary, we had a doctor, a cardiologist, who would bring us donuts every Sunday and sit in the nurse's station and smoke with all the nurses.

Times have changed huh?  I regrettably am a smoker   .  I quit for 11 days last year.  Then my daughter came home!  (LOL, not her fault, mine of course)

Anyway, I am going to quit or at least try my best on January 1st.  I have asthma, I can't breathe and am disgusted with myself.  I hide from my co-workers and hate that I smell like smoke.  I especially feel bad around the kids at school, if I smell.  Due to the asthma, I can't cover it up with perfume, because it sets me off coughing too.

When I first started Nursing School I thought "how can I be a nurse and smoke?"  Then I saw many of my friends actually started smoking in Nursing School!

I am disgusted with myself, as a nurse I feel like a hypocrite.  I don't think we should smoke, but what can I say?

I dont personally find patients who smoke 'disgusting'.  People who smoke <my coworkers from a previous place of employment> took their designated smoke break twice a day.   They are also the ones who called in sick the most from respiratory illnesses, I was one of the supervisors who took the call ins.   Now us nonsmokers when we took a teeny break to go to the potty, answered calls/lights when we got done with business.  Dont ever bother somebody's smoke break........heavens to betsy dont do that!   I think its a personal person's business if they smoke, just dont do it around me, please.   When they did open enrollment for benefits for 2009, they have the tobacco users pay quite a bit more in premiums for coverage..........even if the member does not smoke and they cover a spouse who does smoke, the rates for everybody is still up higher.  I'm glad at least my rates are lessened than smokers, because its fair to do so.

Smoxignal..............good luck with your New Years resolution.  Im an exsmoker for over 8 yrs or so...............and feel so much better.  I also have asthma and have only used 2 unscheduled sick days in 3 years <if people kept their puking cooties away from me, I wouldn't have had those even>.  Most of the facilities around here are now non smoking campuses................I see people clocking out and jetting across the parking lot to smoke in Home Depot's parking lot.   When they started the no smoking campus, they also did the smoking cessation classes too.........they were giving out nicotene gum, patches, and even chantix to the employees who wanted to quit.

I don't smoke but I just think that the smell is terrible on a doctor or nurse who is taking care of a patient. Just doesn't appear "clean and sterile" to me.  You know the smoke always "attaches" to your clothes, hair, breath, etc.

I would find it offensive to have my doctor or nurse stink like smoke and then come to my room to take care of me. It would just give me a different impression. I'd rather smell some CERTS or something. lol

This is a can of worms! Smoking IS a major health risk. What about doctors and nurses who drink ? The ones that over eat  and are obese? The ones who are promiscus ?  We all know and work with people who fall into these categories or labels, are they all disgusting too? Smoking is a terrible habit and an addiction.  It is no longer socially acceptable or politically correct.  It is, however ,a personal choice.

Just for clarification, i didnt mean i found people who smoke disgusting.. The habit of smoking and all that goes with it (i.e., smells, teeth, cough) is disgusting. And i agree, as stated in my prev post, with Lunarcaustic, how hard it is to quit.

I am very happy I was able to quit smoking.  It smells bad and is a huge risk for heart disease and cancer as you all well know.  But,  Man, I do miss it at times................if I was sure an asteroid like the one who killed off the dinosaaurs were gonna blow us up, or that black hole the mayans predicted sucked us into the 'outer limits', Id buy a carton and smoke em.  Until that black hole or asteroid hits, I'm a nonsmoker.   Another point......................its cool that we could set good examples to people as well.   Nagging wont help anybody quit smoking though.  I was nagged and it did no good..........took bronchitis, pneumonia and emergency gallbladder surgery.  I dont advise that route!    Try holding your sutures and while you cough up oysters...........that'll do it every time.  Good luck to those who want to quit!

It is difficult for doctors and nurses to speak to a number of health issues with conviction and be taken very seriously if we are in fact obese, smokers or addicts to various substances.  As role models we should be good stewards of the bodies God gave us.  Yes, I in fact by the grace of God overcame some of these health problems.  And yes I know being "preached to" doesn't always help one overcome these.

I feel that smoking is such an insult to one's health and everyone around the smoker.

Healthcare professionals need to do a self-assessment as to their own health.

We all know the end products of smoking.  I never smoked, never tried it. It is

a time waster, money waster, and a compromise to all participants including the

second-handers.

How can one do patient teaching for someone with this problem if you yourself

have the problem? Healthcare professionals need to set an excellent example in

all aspects of their lives. When I was a patient and someone came in to take my

vitals, check my IV, or draw blood, and they were a smoker-it would immediately

disgust me as they smelled of tobacco smoke. Not therapeutic at all!!!

I don't think anyone should smoke, but doctors and nurses are people too, and sometimes they can have a hard time quitting.  We should lay off them.  They are no different than other humans who have trouble giving up the bad habit.

I agree and nagging doesn't help anybody quit smoking.   Being supportive and sharing gum <I had to have gum when I quit>; give them congrats on another day smoke free and if they 'fell off the wagon, maybe still be supportive of their effort.

I use to smoke over 13 years ago.  I didn't realize how much the smell of the cigarettes remains on you afterward.  Yeah, it's no ones business if you smoke, but, I feel that you shouldn't smoke when you're going to be around patients.  They're sick and especially non-smokers don't want to have to smell it either.  Have some consideration.  When you stop smoking, you'll understand.  Thanks.

Each person has the right to choose. I was personally embarrassed by pt family members seeing outside smoking. But  It took recieving the sad news that my ex-husband was dying with liver & lung cancer for me to quit (4months ago). My 3 children are in their 20's, their father passed away 5weeks ago. This was a motivating factor for me to quit. I believe each person has to be motivated by something within before they are moved to action.

I dont smoke but have friends that are nursing students that do.  I think it is up to each person if they want to smoke or not. Most people know about the risk they are taking  by smoking. My dad used to smoke between 2-3 packs a day until he had his 3rd heart attack and then he quit.

I think as a person that does not smoke, when a person that smokes comes in from smoking, that is the first thing you smell.  For someone who is sick, do you think  they want to smell that.  Its just horrible!!

people shouldn't smoke for so many reasons, moreso if we're in a healthcare profession. the people see us as role models and we don't expect them to  understand or accept the excuse  of "im just human". i think this is only acceptable if we're not involve in the healthcare profession. but since we were educated first before we became nurses and doctors, then it is understood that we know it by heart all the negative effects of smoking. we do patient teachings and dont think will be effective if we are the first person to break the rules.

Wow, I have to agree with you Lea & Lunar, and maybe everyone else too...LOL.

Very good points made by all! I think there needs to be good examples out there, you know, role models to set the standards and provide teachings to the victims of addiction. Yes, I am going to call them victims (having been a smoker for practically 10 years) because there is injury involved but it is most important to realize that it is also the victim who's at fault for conducting such self injurious behavior. I can only hope that there is enough love in the world for all professionals to promote healthy behaviors and take care of their own bodies as to show what a healthy template looks like, right? Otherwise it would sadly seem that the smoking health professional can not be taken seriously (or maybe it'd be viewed as a sign of weakness- simple character flaw!), if they are unalbe to practice what they preach.

That is my opinion, youall!

Who feels otherwise?

I think it is terrible, but I think it is terrible for anyone to smoke, I have not allowed anyone to smoke in my house or car since I owned my first house at 21. Even my dad would smoke outside and yes he was a doc, I always tried to get him to stop, but he started at 14 yo sad though/

Health Professionals are human beings with the same frailities all other humans have.  It is unfair of many of you, to hold any one of us to such high standards, make unkind statements and are so generally unforgiving.

Let me clarify in case my words were mis understood, I do not think the people that smoke are terrible, my dad was a smoker obviously he was not terrible, the smoking is what is terrible in that it destroys your body, my dad has suffered the affects of smoking and second hand smoking has been proven to cause many health problems, esp children who have no choice but to sit in a smoke filled car andbreath all that poison, as for Doctors or any other healthcare professional who KNOW the bad affects from smoking and avocate to patients what THEY should and should NOT do, it is hypocritical to be doing something detramental to your body while telling others they should NOT do other bad habit things. I knew a friend of my dads who was a pulmonary surgeon and would always lecture everyone on the bad affects of smoking and chastized others who did, only to find out after he was diagnosed with lung cancer that he too was a closet smoker, SO my opinion is that if you are going to be in the healthcare bus and tell others what they should do to be healthy then do the opposite yourself that is a problem, but as adults obviously anyone can do whatever they want to there own bodies, and your right why should others care, as long as I personally do not have to breath your smoke I am fine with you smoking.

I am a smoker...I hate it that I smoke ..I have tried to quit several times....patches,gum,etc.etc.....

I wont give up on quitting.Smoking is an addiction in my opinion...If at first you dont succeed try try again....

I also agree with Ponza......There are many other " vices" that lead to self-destruction that are not harped on continually...like drinking and obesity....and addictions to certain meds......

speak your mind..for those that matter dont mind and those that mind ..dont matter..

I am a smoker and do my best not to smoke at work. I think it smells terrible and I really do not want my patients to smell it on me. I started smoking because it supposedly made me "cool". How uncool is that. I have tried a few times to quit and did once for almost a year, but picked it back up. Like any addiction I justify and rationalize it and tell myself, "i'll quit tomorrow".

I have the Rx chantex, but have heard so many horror stories of depression and suicidal thoughts while on it that I am now to scared to try it. I am prone to depression so I really have to be careful with stuff like this. My husband who is not prone to depression is even to scared to try it. Anyone out there tried it?

I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS.

I am a smoker....if you have never smoked and quit, please don't judge us who smoke...I would say 98% of us would just stop today if it was that simple.  It is an addiction just like any other drug, a person who does crack everyday can not just stop, someone who drinks everyday can not just stop, smoking pot, poppin pills, eating way to much, drinking 4 cans of pop (soda) a day, the 3rd pot of coffee of the day, there are so many bad habits that harm our body!  I do everything I possibly can do, wherever I am to say away from people who are non-smokers.     Good luck to all that try to quit this year, congrads to the ones who have already....I know how hard it is...I am a smoker.
